Job Description

The Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is looking for hardware-oriented engineers who enjoy challenging technical problems, creating innovative solutions, and fielding those solutions. The Georgia Tech Research Institute has opportunities for research engineers within the Command, Control, and Communications Program Office (C3PO). Projects focus on developing hardware for a wide range of Department of Defense applications. Selected candidates will work in the analysis and technology assessment of Command and Control (C2) platforms and support teams designing, analyzing, and implementing alternative hardware and software technologies to update these platforms. Hardware technology development includes designing and building custom hardware, modifying existing hardware, implementing solutions using general-purpose hardware, and re-purposing hardware. Selected candidates will work both individually and apart of multidisciplinary teams.

Job Duties

  • Liaising with suppliers/vendors and GTRI's machine shop
  • Undertaking relevant research
  • Producing and implementing designs of complex enclosures using CAD software (i.e. SolidWorks) and test procedures
  • Presenting designs to sponsors
  • Testing, evaluating, modifying, and re-testing designs and other products
  • Writing reports and documentation
  • Providing technical advice
  • Analyzing and interpreting data from modeling and measurements

Travel Requirements

10% - 25% travel

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist II

  • A Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field of study and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field of study and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field of study.

Senior Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist

  • A Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field of study and seven (7) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field of study and nine (9) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace, Computer Science, Physics, or a related field of study and four (4) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Master's or Doctoral degree program relevant to this position will be considered. Candidate must have a graduation date of no later than December 2020
  • Mechanical design experience using 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Hands-on experience with fabrication or assembly of hardware
  • Good written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least one year of full-time work experience in applicable field
  • Prior experience with military systems
  • Prior experience with airborne platforms
  • FEA modeling experience for thermal, stress, or modal simulation work (Solidworks and Abaqus preferred)
  • CFD thermal modeling experience
  • Additive manufacturing experience
  • Hobbies or extracurricular activities that contribute to the applicant's technical ability

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Ability to obtain Secret Clearance upon hire
