Mechanical Piping Designer

We have an opening for a Mechanical Piping Designer to provide advanced technical support on multiple projects in the Environmental Restoration Division's (ERD) Ground Water Restoration Team. Under minimal supervision, the selected candidate will provide advanced technical support to associates, engineers, and scientists performing a variety of drafting and design duties, including interpreting and translating concepts into design layouts, finished drawings, and other documentation as required for research and development projects. You will design, analyze cost, and generate schedule and material planning. You will solve complex technical problems through regular interactions with co-workers and Project Leads. You will exercise regular decision making to establish or modify guidelines, techniques, and procedures. The ERD Ground Water support team supports multiple Laboratory programs along with other government agencies through Work-For-Others (WFO) projects. Some travel may be required, as well as flexibility to work overtime, shift and or weekends to accomplish goals. You will report programmatically to Project Leads and administratively to the Central Drafting first-line supervisor. This position is in the Integrated Engineering and Design Central Drafting Group in the National Security Engineering Division (NSED), within the Engineering Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Provide general design support for experimental work in a specialized R&D facility.
  • Generate moderately complex schematic, piping and instrumentation diagram (P&ID) assembly, facility, and mechanical part fabrication drawing, generate parts lists.
  • Maintain and update facility system drawings and as-built fabrication documentation.
  • Modify existing drawing packages as needed to meet current requirements.
  • Use Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) tools such as AutoCAD, Inventor, Integraph PDS, and MicoStation.
  • Use Product Data Management (PDM) tools such as PTC's Windchill.
  • Work regularly with other resources including Electrical and Mechanical engineers, technicians, designers, fabricators, and coordinators.
  • Contribute and analyze moderately complex preliminary design concepts and engineering decision process.
  • Acquire and analyze moderately complex preliminary data during design or prototyping of components, and systems or equipment.
  • Maintain a high level of safety awareness, while adhering to written safety procedures.
  • Perform all assignments in accordance with ES&H, Security, and business practice requirements and policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 534.3 level

  • Provide advanced Mechanical Piping design and drafting support where overall design parameters and specifications have been established.
  • Contribute to preliminary design concepts for hardware, componentry, and systems including making independent judgment and decisions.
  • Estimate scheduling and costs to determine effective methods in design, materials, and time to meet project deliverables and prepare and present technical material for design reviews, procedures, and other related documentation.

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Associate degree in drafting, mechanical, engineering, machine or manufacturing technology with related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience related to the skills, knowledge, and abilities listed below.
  • Individual creativity and judgment in order to resolve problems and provide alternative approaches.
  • Experience generating moderately complex schematics, P&ID, assembly, facility, and mechanical part fabrication drawings; generate parts lists.
  • Experience maintaining and updating facility system drawings and as-built fabrication documentation.
  • Intermediate knowledge of drafting, procurement, and fabrication process.
  • Experience analyzing moderately complex preliminary design concepts and contributing to the engineering decision process.
  • Experience performing calculations for the design of mechanical system.
  • Experience with computer aided design equipment using software packages such as AutoCAD, Inventor, Integraph PDS, and MicoStation.
  • Effective communication, presentation, interpersonal, and teamwork skills and abilities.
  • Experience with safe work practices and high regard for safety awareness.

Additional qualifications at the 534.3 level

  • Experience in supporting environmental restoration projects and participating in formal design reviews.
  • Experience making independent, fundamental decisions regarding a variety of technical problems.
  • Advanced experience with computer aided design equipment using software packages such as AutoCAD, Inventor, Integraph PDS, and MicoStation.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering technology or a related field.
  • Applied experience with SolidWorks CAD software.
  • Experience in reviewing and verifying the accuracy of work performed by peers and other engineering disciplines as needed.
