Mechanical Technologist (Early/Mid-Career)

We are seeking a Mechanical Technologist to support the Product Definition Tools and Resources (2239) departments Additive Manufacturing (AM) capability by working part manufacturing in our 3D printing laboratory, becoming a subject matter expert on our AM capability, and assisting customers with their designs to ensure they meet our standards for printing.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Interface with the mechanical/electrical design community/customers to create and deliver 3D printed parts/assemblies for R&D applications
+ Manage the queue of incoming requests and processing incoming models in software to create build files
+ Perform post-process cleanup that include joining, sanding, and painting activities to create realistic, functional parts and assemblies
+ Work directly with vendors to coordinate repairs and oversee maintenance contracts
+ Establishing budgets and performing expense planning
+ Monitor the eyewash and chemical processes and inventory, and ensuring compliance with applicable Environment Safety and Health requirements
+ Other responsibilities include: authoring and maintaining primary hazard documents and lab operating notebooks; modifying and simplifying CAD design models in preparation for 3D building; developing, improving and streamlining 3D printing processes.

Some travel will be required.


+ Associate's degree in Engineering, Science or Technology discipline
+ Experience using PTCs Creo solid modeling and PDMLink applications
+ Active US DOE Q security clearance


+ Three years of relevant experience.
+ Experience in Fused Deposition Modeling additive manufacturing technology and Stratasys FDM systems
+ Experience in manufacturing and/or inspection, as it applies to product drawing definition
+ Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products
+ Skill and knowledge in mechanics or related technologies, such as electronics, computer-aided design and manufacturing software, or instrumentation.
+ Knowledge and experience with installing, testing, repairing, and maintaining equipment or systems.
+ Ability to read and understand written or verbal instructions, drawings, layouts, and other related specifications.
+ Experience and demonstrated skills in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions on problems affecting systems and equipment.
+ Knowledge of legal requirements and environmental impacts affecting equipment and systems maintenance and engineering.
+ Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

The Product Definition Tools and Resources (2239) organization delivers common configuration management tools and resources that leverage industry best practices, modern applications, and NW-specific requirements and best practices to assure consistent and high-quality engineering product definition to Sandia design/engineering staff. We also provide Sandia's largest 3D printing capability in polymers.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start.
