What Your Job Will Be Like:

You could be the mechanical technologist we are seeking to join our dynamic team to design, build, test, and deploy the next phase Explosive Destructive System (EDS) on behalf of the United States Army in support of Chemical Weapons treaty compliance and response actions across the country. This work is typically the integration of complex power systems, novel heat exchange systems, impulse pressure load analysis, coupled with oversight of several ongoing contract support material activities. The work involves all aspects of design, all phases of construction, testing, and deployment with full documentation for customer use.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Maintain, operate, and upgrade chemical weapon demilitarization equipment for the Army.

+ Develop/modify the plans, equipment, fixturing, and procedures for a given experiment/test.

+ Design new test or deployment hardware for an existing system or sub-system.

+ Work with fabrication shops to produce parts.

+ Work with equipment vendors to select components and replacements

+ Work with lab Principal Investigators, visitors, and interns.

+ Modest domestic travel as required to coordinate contract activities, conduct testing, deployment, and recurring upgrades to support demilitarization operations by the Army.

+ Travel which may include visits to field demonstrations, project sites, vendor/manufacturer locations; duration can range from day trips within commuting distance to deployments of varying duration within the United States, and may include opportunities for international travel and conferences.

Qualifications We Require:

+ Bachelor’s degree in a related engineering field or four (4) years of practical experience with an AA or AS degree

+ Experience in producing designs and product definition of complex objects

+ Experience using shop tools and mechanical measurement tools

+ Ability to obtain and maintain DOE Q-level security clearance

Selected applicants will be required to pass a Job Placement Assessment before beginning the job to ensure that they perform the essential physical requirements, with or without accommodations.

Qualifications We Desire:

+ Proficient in reading mechanical drawings and technical documents

+ Experience with computer aided design (CAD) programs such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD

+ Experience with LABVIEW or other data acquisition equipment

+ Experience with electronic sensors

+ Experience in pressure systems as well as high vacuum system techniques and materials

+ Experience in design and engineering with process system equipment, pumps, motors, and instrumentation

+ Experience in mechanical and electrical system fabrication

+ Experience with material handling equipment, overhead cranes, and forklifts

+ Experience directing and leading all aspects of manufacturing of hardware

+ Knowledge of materials characterization techniques

+ Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

+ Active DOE Q-level security clearance or equivalent

About Our Team:

The Exploratory Systems Technology Department (8636) is accountable to partners for all aspects of Design, Build, Test, and Deploy of multiple advanced systems and system components across a broad spectrum of mission portfolio. Our work supports national Nuclear Deterrence efforts, Global Security, Treaty Compliance Efforts, and internal National Security. Center 8600 is Sandia's primary organization for CBRN (Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear) technologies. Our work extends to design and development of novel chemical mechanical systems for waste and energy conversion technologies.

Additionally, the department supports other Sandia groups and external partners with engineering services by performing analysis, testing, and design. We maintain the required mechanical engineering and design staff needed to design, deliver, and support state-of-the-art multi-system integrated solutions across a broad spectrum of company projects.

Security Clearance:
