The National Security Engineering Division (NSED) has multiple openings for Mechanical Technologists to support the Nuclear and Chemical Science Division (NACS). The NACS Division provides expertise in particle physics, nuclear physics, radiation detection, nuclear measurements, chemical and nuclear forensic science, nuclear and radio-chemistry, isotope geochemistry, and environmental radiochemistry. You will work under general supervision and perform a combination of limited technical duties to provide support to the engineering and physics team solving problems in fundamental science (dark matter and neutrino research), stockpile stewardship and other national security programs such as forensics, nonproliferation, and counterterrorism. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of scientists, engineers, designers, and technicians dedicated to the research in the area of fundamental and mission oriented nuclear science. Primary interactions will be with the physicists, engineers, designers, and fabrication technicians. These positions will report programmatically to the NACS Group Leader, and administratively to NSED within the Engineering Directorate.

These positions will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will

  • Conceptualize ideas and designs and manufacture these ideas into tangible subassemblies using CAD models and NC milling machine techniques.
  • Collaborate with scientists, engineers, and high-level personnel to provide general technical support to various programmatic tasks.
  • Work from drawings, sketches and verbal/written instructions to assemble and test various mechanical designs.
  • Acquire and analyze moderately complex data, report results, and identify problems.
  • Use drafting, design, engineering, and scientific programs on computer systems to produce supportive documentation and graphics.
  • Apply intermediate knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes in the solution of moderately complex mechanical problems.
  • Provide general technical support for a wide variety of laboratory activities, including cryogenic systems, vacuum, electrical, and plumbing/cooling installations.
  • Follow and adhere to written, operational, and safety procedures in the course of completing job assignments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the 533.3 level

  • Provide advanced technical support for a wide variety of laboratory activities, including cryogenic systems, vacuum, electrical, and plumbing/cooling installations.
  • Acquire and analyze complex data and provide solutions and alternate approaches to complex mechanical problems using individual creativity and judgment.
  • Apply high level knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes in the solution of complex mechanical problems.
  • Provide active input and evaluation on selected designs with an eye toward meeting project goals.

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Associate degree in an engineering technology such as mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience operating CAD software design program.
  • Experience in machining, mechanical fabricating and assembly, and de-bugging systems in the solution of mechanical problems.
  • Intermediate knowledge of engineering hardware design and testing processes.
  • Intermediate knowledge of operating principles used in vacuum and cryogenic technologies.
  • Intermediate knowledge of electronic principles, components, and operation.
  • Experience with personal computers and associated software such as MS Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Effective written, verbal and presentation communication skills necessary to communicate tactfully and effectively and ability to work both independently and in a multidisciplinary team environment.

Additional qualifications at the 533.3 level

  • Significant related experience with mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing systems including machining, mechanical assembly, optical metrology, and de-bugging systems in the prioritization and solution of complex mechanical problems.
  • Advanced understanding of operating principles used in vacuum and cryogenic technologies.
  • Effective written, verbal, presentation, and feedback skills necessary to communicate tactfully and effectively.

Qualifications We Desire
