We have an opening for Senior Research Scientist in the field of Advanced Material Development and Energy Materials to work with an interdisciplinary team, and lead projects that include: high-temperature lanthanide and actinide materials synthesis, development of advanced alloys, and advanced metallurgical processing. You will be expected to make significant contributions in one or more of the following areas: direct LLNL programmatic areas, Laboratory Directed Research and Development projects, and other externally funded materials related activities. This position is in the Actinides and Lanthanides Group within the Materials Science Division.

This position will be filled at either the SES.4 or SES.5 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.

Essential Duties
- Lead highly advanced projects on alloy design and development including planning, organization, budget, and schedule.
- Design and execute synthesis routes to enable and produce high quality, f-electron based alloys and compounds for both basic science experiments and advanced manufacturing evaluation.
- Develop highly complex and innovative concepts in new materials and promote new ideas; pursue funding both internally and externally to advance the scientific footprint of LLNL.
- Establish and nurture relationships with new industrial partners.
- Document and publish research results in external peer-reviewed scientific journals and propose, organize, and participate in symposia at international conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
In Addition at the SES.5 Level
- Influence broad project vision, strategy and technical direction acting as a technical leader on projects/programs, while serving as a subject matter expert related to alloy development.
- Guide and provide scientific and technical direction in new materials areas through development and application projects including LDRD and internally/externally funded activities.
- Serve on scientific or technical committees representing the Laboratory.

- PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, Physics or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Subject matter expert knowledge in rare earth element alloys including synthesis and materials handling.
- Significant experience performing self-directed research with an emphasis on synthesis-characterization feedback.
- Recognized expertise at the national or international level (e.g. R&D 100 Awards, awards from national societies, etc.).
- Significant experience and proven track record writing successful proposals for external funding.
- Demonstrated background leading teams and developing early career staff.
- A strong publication record with a demonstrated track record in alloy development.
- Expert written and verbal communication skills, specifically the ability to explain and present highly complex ideas, as well as to influence employees and all levels of management and/or external sponsors.
In Addition at the SES.5 Level
- Extensive experience and demonstrated ability as a technical leader in alloy development.
- Expert knowledge in developing, sustaining and growing R&D and programmatic projects.
- Expert level communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills necessary to effectively present, explain, influence, and advise senior management and/or external sponsors and to speak knowledgeably to audiences with diverse educational backgrounds to communicate basic scientific principles, goals, and achievements.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with a broad spectrum of materials synthesis and characterization concepts and techniques.
- The ability to work on several important projects simultaneously

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
