Microbiologist

We have an opening for a Staff Scientist with experience in microbiology. You will support ongoing bioremediation work that directly impacts programs within the federal government. Candidates should have an interest in learning new skills and techniques and applying them to solve real-world scientific problems that inform the safe use of these technologies for both government and commercial applications. The position is in the Biosecurity and Bioforensics group of the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division and matrixed to Global Security.
In this role you will:
- Conduct standard microbiological practices (e.g., pouring and streaking agar plates, sterile culture, growth curves)
- Isolate microorganisms from environmental samples.
- Screen environmental isolates and consortia for biodegradation activity using previously developed assays.
- Engineer microbes to express recombinant proteins and purify produced protein.
- Provide solutions to problems of moderate complexity that require creative use of established and/or innovative methods.
- Develop novel assays to screen environmental isolates and consortia for biodegradation activity
- Design and implement long-term culturing experiments.
- Evaluate large data sets to refine, inform, and design subsequent experiments
- Maintaining a safe laboratory environment.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
- Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
- Familiarity with sterile techniques, culturing and maintenance of bacterial strains, and media preparation.
- Experience with multiple molecular biology techniques (PCR, microscopy, SDS PAGE, and/or Western Blot)
- Ability to perform basic laboratory maintenance (restocking, waste removal, organization etc.)
- Proficient written, verbal communication and interpersonal skills necessary to deliver presentations, prepare written reports and to interact with a diverse set of scientists, engineers, and other technical and administrative staff.
- Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a range of experience in experimental design, techniques, and execution.
- Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment
Qualifications We Desire:
- Experience with recombinant protein expression and purification.
- Experience working in a Biosafety Level 2 laboratory.
- Experience working with non-model bacterial species
