Microfabrication Engineer: III-V Optoelectronics and Heterogeneous Integration (Early Career)

Our team is seeking a creative Microfabrication Process Engineer focused in the areas of compound semiconductor optoelectronics and integrated photonics technologies. You will develop and implement novel semiconductor processes for state-of-the-art devices, including heterogeneously integrating III-V materials with silicon photonics. You will assume a key role within a robust and cohesive team of applied physicists, electrical and optical engineers, and material scientists inventing and building next-generation photonic systems based on III-V semiconductor optoelectronics and integrated InP and silicon photonics.

On any given day, you may be called to:

+ Perform a wide variety of microfabrication process engineering and development activities in a Class 100 compound semiconductor facility
+ Innovate across a full suite of microelectronic fabrication processes including: metrology, photolithography, wet and dry etch, metal evaporation and electroplating, thin film deposition, wafer thinning, and dicing
+ Develop innovative new processes to meet emerging technology needs
+ Maintain established baseline manufacturing processes used in proving device feasibility, and, as appropriate, mature those processes into the low-variability, well-characterized and documented processes that may be required for qualified component delivery to our customers
+ Deliver on negotiated project commitments and all ownership responsibilities
+ Design experiments to enable continuous improvement for robust baseline processes
+ Maintain documentation and statistical process controls
+ Perform failure analysis and root cause investigations for process and equipment excursions
+ Collaborate and team with MicroFab Operations personnel and other Sandia technical staff


+ Master's degree in Electronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or other related STEM degree, or a Bachelors degree in the above fields plus 3 years of relevant semiconductor processing experience
+ Experience in direct hands-on compound semiconductor microfabrication processing of arsenide-, phosphide- and/or antimonide-based devices on GaAs, InP, and GaSb, including photolithography, wet and dry etch, metal deposition, wafer thinning and dicing, and experience processing partial wafers
+ Ability to acquire and maintain a Department of Energy security clearance


+ Demonstrated experience developing new processes and writing process flows in a process engineering role
+ Experience in heterogeneously integrating compound semiconductors with silicon
+ Proven experience developing new semiconductor processes and writing process flows
+ Experience processing R&D scale partial wafers in a class 100 or better clean room environment
+ Experience processing silicon wafers and silicon devices
+ Significant experience in Design of Experiments and Statistical Process Control used in low-volume or custom integrated circuit manufacturing
+ An active DOE L or higher clearance
+ Excellent interpersonal, communication and time management skills
+ Demonstrated ability to work well in a team environment
+ Proficiency with common computer applications and the ability to present data in a clear, concise, and understandable way
+ Understanding of semiconductor device physics and compound semiconductor materials properties
+ Excellent problem-solving skills with a history of developing original ideas and techniques

Department Description:

The III-V Optoelectronics Department develops compound semiconductor devices, photonics, and microsystems for national security applications including high-performance computing, communications, renewable energy, sensing and imaging. As part of Sandias Microsystems Science, Technology and Components Center, we research, design, fabricate, prototype, test and deliver novel lasers, photonic integrated circuits, photonic microsystems, and sensors.

We use state-of-the-art materials and fabrication capabilities within Sandias MESA cleanroom complex to serve a broad mix of internal and external clients. Core capabilities include:

+ Optical, optoelectronic and electronic modeling and simulation
+ Epitaxial design, materials growth (MOCVD/MBE) and materials characterization
+ Design, microfabrication and testing of III-V photonic devices and infrared detectors
+ Heterogeneous microsystem integration and prototyping
+ High-speed and harsh-environment optoelectronics, including device reliability assessments
