SKA Organisation
Cape Town

    Full Time

At SKAO we are coordinating a global effort to deliver the largest science facility on the planet. The SKA will be a next-generation radio telescope that will help to answer key questions in astrophysics, drive technological innovation and support human capital development.

More than a dozen partner countries and over a thousand scientists and engineers around the world are already on board, making the SKA an international collaboration like no other, and one of the most ambitious science and engineering endeavours of the 21st century.

Headquartered in the UK, with telescope sites in Australia and South Africa, it will be one observatory operating two telescopes, an endeavour spanning three continents. Multinational by design, SKAO will soon join only a handful of other science infrastructures in becoming an intergovernmental organisation.

Preparation by the SKA member countries to establish the SKA Observatory as an Inter-Governmental Organisation is well advanced; the SKA Observatory is expected to be established by early 2021 and construction of SKA-Low in Western Australia and SKA-Mid in South Africa is expected to begin later that year. The start of the ramp up of SKA Operations staff in Australia and in South Africa will also begin in 2021, and the transition of the observatory from the Construction Phase to the Operations Phase is planned for 2028.

SKA Operations in South Africa will be conducted in partnership with the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO). SKA Operations in Australia will be conducted in partnership with the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO). The Observatory will also partner closely with a global network of SKA Regional Centres through which SKA users will access science data products and a suite of tools and resources to further analyse SKA data.

For more information on the SKA project visit http://www.skatelescope.org (http://www.skatelescope.org/).

The SKA Observatory offers a competitive salary and a generous pension and benefits package. As an employee of an Inter-Governmental Organisation, an appointee who is not a national of the country in which the role is based may be subject to personal Privileges and Immunities.

A unique opportunity in South Africa for an electronic engineering professional with experience in the Integration, Testing and Verification of large scientific, technology or engineering projects.

The Role

The MID Integration Engineer will play a key role in the construction of the SKA1 Observatory MID Radio Telescope in South Africa.

The MID Integration Engineer will report to the MID AIV Lead Engineer who has the overall system Assembly, Integration and Verification (AIV) responsibility for the SKA1 MID Radio Telescope.

The MID Integration Engineer will help establish and manage a small competent team in Cape Town to support the integration, testing, verification and de-bugging of products arriving from Suppliers at the Integration Test Facility (ITF).

The MID Integration Engineer will work together with the MID AIV Manager, who is provided by SARAO as part of the MID AIV Work Package. The MID AIV Team is responsible for carrying out integration and tests, for developing scripts and procedures, and for the overall verification of the MID Telescope System Requirements.

The MID Integration Engineer will support and coordinate with the MID AIV Manager and the MID Product Delivery Team (PDT) located at the SKAO headquarters in the UK to ensure that the SKA1 MID Telescope becomes ready for an Operational Readiness Review at the end of the construction phase, before the handover to the Operations Team.

The MID Integration Engineer is a member of the MID PDT, a multidisciplinary team responsible for the “delivery” of MID products. Within the MID PDT the MID Integration Engineer provides engineering support and technical leadership, both in her/his specific discipline and across the entire MID telescope.
