Multiple faculty positions in Mechanical Engineering
Cleveland State University

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Cleveland State University has four (4) openings for tenure-track and visiting faculty members to start in August, 2021. Two positions are available at the tenure-track Assistant Professor level with research specializations involving smart and sustainable manufacturing (TTM) and/or renewable energy (TTE). The third tenure-track position is available at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank and reserved for candidates who will bring NSF or NIH funding in the above areas and/or human-machine systems (TTH). Although we expect candidates to have research concentrations as noted above, we will consider applicants who demonstrate a track record of convergent research combining mechatronics, robotics or control systems with manufacturing, renewable energy or human-machine systems.

Tenure-track candidates are expected to continue or develop an externally-funded research program and teach courses to meet the needs of the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. The Visiting Professor (VP) position is for one year, renewable for up to two additional years. The selected candidate will be required to teach courses in the broader areas of mechanical engineering, with special needs in solid mechanics, design, and thermal/fluids science.

All candidates must hold an undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering. TT candidates must have an earned doctoral degree, and VP candidates a Master degree, in Mechanical Engineering or a closely- related discipline with degree conferred on or before July 1, 2021. Successful TT candidates will demonstrate potential for teaching excellence and the highest standards of scholarship and professional activity in their research areas. Successful VP candidates will possess excellent communication skills, a potential for industry collaboration and an ability to contribute through teaching and/or service to the diversity, cultural sensitivity and excellence of the academic community.

Cleveland State University is an urban campus serving a racially, culturally, and economically diverse student body. Diversity is extremely important to CSU. The successful candidate will be able to make a positive contribution to the CSU community in this respect.

Applicants must submit 1) a cover letter indicating their intended application code (TTM, TTH, TTE or VP) and their qualifications, 2) curriculum vitae (including names of at least three professional references), 3) teaching statement, 4) research statement (exempt for VP candidates), and 5) diversity statement through the Human Resources website: https://hrjobs.csuohio.edu/postings/13573 for TTM, TTH or TTE. https://hrjobs.csuohio.edu/postings/13574 for VP). The applicant will be asked to provide email addresses for three referees who will upload letters of recommendation upon our request.

Applications received by February 28, 2021 will be given full consideration. Applications received after this date will continue to be reviewed until the position is filled. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and competitive with market rates. Questions should be directed to search committee chair Dr. Hanz Richter (h.richter@csuohio.edu).

The Mechanical Engineering Department provides a rigorous education in the principles of mechanical engineering, supplemented by practical hands-on experience and communication skills to transform students into well-rounded and competent, ready-to-go engineers. The department offers doctoral, master’s and an ABET-accredited bachelor’s degree, with currently 450 undergraduate students and 75 graduate students. Current areas of research include manufacturing, wind energy, turbomachinery, human-machine systems, rehabilitation engineering and control systems.

It is the policy of Cleveland State University to provide equal opportunity to all qualified applicants and employees without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression, national origin, age, protected veteran or disabled status, or genetic information. Offer of employment is contingent on satisfactory completion of the University’s verification of credentials (including evidence of the terminal degree) by July 1, 2021 and other information required by law and/or University policies or practices, including but not limited to a criminal background check. Hiring is contingent on maintaining existing levels of funding from the state of Ohio.
