We have an opening in the Nuclear and Particle Physics Group for a Postdoctoral Researcher to play a major role in conducting nuclear physics experiments utilizing the surrogate reaction method and radioactive beams to constrain neutron capture cross sections for nuclei far from stability. This research is vital to improving our understanding of the formation of the heavy elements via nucleosynthesis processes. The work will utilize radioactive beams at TRIUMF in the near term and FRIB in the longer term. The responsibilities include setting up and participating in experiments, performing data analysis, working with theorists to obtain neutron reaction rates, and interpreting and publishing the results. This position is in the Nuclear and Particle Physics Group of the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division.

Essential Duties
- Set up and conduct radioactive beam experiments with charged-particle and gamma-ray detectors at accelerator-based facilities.
- Perform charged particle and gamma ray data analysis and interpret the results of experiments.
- Set up and troubleshoot electronics related to digital and analog data-acquisition systems.
- Develop simulations of detector performance and validate simulations using calibration sources and experimental results.
- Work with nuclear theorists to interpret data to deduce cross section information.
- Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meetings.
- Work in close collaboration with colleagues at TRIUMF, and the broader nuclear science community to perform measurements on radioactive nuclei.
- Provide technical contributions to the development of future nuclear physics experiments.

Qualifications
- PhD in a nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics, nuclear engineering, nuclear chemistry or related field.
- Knowledge and experience with accelerator-based experiments.
- Experience with highly segmented charged-particle and gamma-ray detection systems.
- Programming experience in C++ and/or other programming languages.
- Experience performing data analysis and simulations with ROOT, GEANT4, or similar programs.
- Experience working with digital and analog electronics for data acquisition systems, specifically NIM and VME electronics.
- Documented publication record in peer-reviewed literature in physics or a related field.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a multi-disciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.

Security Clearance: None required.

Note: This is a 2year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of 3years. Eligible candidates are those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
