Nuclear Counting Facility - Scientist/Engineer

We have an opening for a Staff Scientist in the Nuclear Counting Facility (NCF). You will provide counting and engineering support for LLNL projects involving the measurement of gamma, alpha, and beta-radiation emitting samples. Responsibilities include performing counting analyses, QA/QC procedures for instruments, hardware maintenance and troubleshooting, and interacting with customers to ensure quality data is produced and delivered. Engineering responsibilities for a variety of custom instrumentation include CAD drafting of components for 3d-printing or machining, programming and scripting using LabView or Python, or other tools used for developing or modernizing custom hardware. This position is in the Nuclear Counting Facility within the Nuclear and Chemical Sciences Division (NACS).

In this role you will 

  • Perform quantitative radiation counting and routine data analysis.
  • Perform maintenance and process QA/QC records for various radiation detection instrumentation and related equipment.
  • Interact with NCF customers including development of custom counting routines for unique samples to deliver high quality data.
  • Perform routine maintenance functions for radiation detectors including assessments of background, performing calibrations, and troubleshooting errors.
  • Support the development of hardware and software for various modernization and automation efforts.
  • Follow, maintain, and develop standard operating procedures.
  • Work occasional non-routine hours for experiment needs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship
  • BS in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Engineering or related field, or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience with radiation counting instrumentation, techniques, and applications.
  • Experience with python, LabView, embedded control, and/or similar programming/GUI development experience.
  • Experience in processing samples, analyzing data, and writing reports in a laboratory setting.
  • Proficient communication and interpersonal skills necessary to work in a collaborative research environment and to document and organize technical data.
  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks by interacting independently with professionals in the execution of responsibilities with varied and dynamic priorities.
  • Attention to detail, motivation, and eagerness to learn new skills and techniques.

 

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with CAD drafting and design of customized parts for projects that involve 3d-printing or machining custom components.
