Summary

The Nuclear Experiments and Irradiation Testing (NEIT) Group within the Reactor and Nuclear Systems Division (RNSD), Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), seeks applicants for an early career nuclear instrumentation research engineer, with emphasis in nuclear and high-temperature instrumentation.

One of the central missions of the NEIT Group is to research, develop, and test materials and sensor technologies in a high neutron flux, high temperature environment. Customers include the US Department of Energy, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and other organizations within the US government, US industry, and international industry. The NEIT Group focuses on the combination of advanced analytical analysis, experiment development, and hands-on fabrication. The primary functions of this position are to (1) research and develop instrumentation sensor technologies in radiation and/or high temperature environments, and (2) support the design and operation of irradiation experiments for in-reactor characterization of advanced structural materials and fuels.

Requirements

Responsibilities & Qualifications

The successful candidate will design experiments that test advanced sensor technologies, nuclear fuels, and structural materials in harsh nuclear and thermal environments and will support the fabrication and irradiation of those experiments. The selected candidate will be tasked to conceptualize and help design advanced irradiation vehicles, experimental setups, and in-pile instrumentation systems. The position requires occasional work in a radiation environment. The candidate should have a history of writing research proposals and leading research activities in instrumentation and sensor development.

The successful candidate will be expected work independently and in a team environment to develop experiment designs and to work with other engineers, technicians, and craft support staff to implement those designs. The position requires overseeing design drawing production and assembly and operating procedures, managing and assisting in the fabrication of experiments, and monitoring and troubleshooting the experiment control system. The candidate will be expected to thoroughly document work performed to meet stringent quality assurance (QA) requirements, as well as sponsor and mission needs. This position requires the candidate to work with other members of the NEIT group to write proposals, estimate costs, and pursue new funding opportunities.

Qualifications Required

The qualified candidate must have a PhD in nuclear or electrical engineering and at least 5 years of relevant experience. Excellent verbal, presentation, and writing skills are required to enable effective interaction with technical peers and program managers.

The candidate must be willing to become certified as a radiation worker and perform work in a radiation environment when required.

Clearance Requirements: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE clearance.

This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse program (WSAP) testing designed position which requires passing a preplacement drug test, as well as participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result to ORNL.

Qualifications Desired

The candidate should have proven laboratory skills and must have demonstrated an aptitude to develop complex designs. It is highly desirable for the candidate to have experience with nuclear reactor facilities and experimentation, particularly in the fields of nuclear materials or nuclear instrumentation.
