Job Description

The Open Systems Electronics Engineer will develop standards, technologies, and systems that leverage modular open architectures to improve system performance and life cycle costs. The position is with the Applied Embedded Systems Division (AES) of the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS). AES is predominantly focused on the research, development, testing, and deployment of embedded electronic and electromechanical systems in the fields of Electronic Warfare (EW), command and control, communications, avionics, physiological monitoring, entertainment, and industrial controls. AES sponsors include the armed forces, major defense contractors, and Fortune 100 industrial companies.

Job Duties

  • Develop systems based on modular open standards
  • Develop hardware and systems standards based on modular open architectures
  • Troubleshoot hardware and software anomalies and develop solutions using system specifications, interface definitions, and technical drawing packages
  • Integrate system components and support equipment in laboratory and field settings
  • Interface with stakeholders to gather input on standards documents and technical solutions
  • Provide technical expertise and support in the area of modular open standards to identify related system issues and risks
  • Provide Department of Defense customers engineering guidance as it relates to modular open standards for Major Acquisition Programs
  • Support the development of a validation and verification process to establish Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA) standards compliance criteria.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, other engineering or science degree.

Research Engineer/Scientist/Technologist II

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, other engineering or science degree and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, other engineering or science degree and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, other engineering or science degree.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience analyzing and designing analog and digital circuits
  • Experience analyzing system behavior in both time and frequency domains
  • Experience developing and debugging software that directly interfaces with hardware components

Candidates currently enrolled in an accredited Bachelor's degree with a graduation date of May 2021 and skills relevant to this position will be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience developing or using modular standards such as Hardware Open Systems Technologies (HOST), Sensor Open System Architectures (SOSA), VITA 65, etc.
  • Experience development or integrating Radio Frequency (RF) systems for electronic warfare or communications
  • Experience with development or integration of electronic modules or circuits for Department of Defense (DoD) systems
  • Experience testing electronic systems

U.S. Citizenship Requirements

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Clearance Type Required

Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
