We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in optical freeform fabrication R&D.You will actively participate in research to design, conduct, and characterize experiments to understand the tool influence function as well as to fabricate novel, cutting edge freeform optic prototypes.This position is in theNIF Optics and Targets Materials groupof the Materials Science Division.
Essential Duties
- Design and conduct grinding and polishing experiments to understand the chemical and mechanical interactions between a sub-aperture polishing or grinding tool, workpiece and the interface slurry.
- Utilize a broad range of standard and novel characterization and metrology tools to quantify the chemical and mechanical interactions.
- Perform computations to model various hypothesized chemical and mechanical interactions.
- Conduct detailed data analysis and compare with proposed model calculations.
- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design and execution of research to address defined problems.
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with scientists inamultidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Document research; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Recent PhD in materials science, chemical engineering ora related field.
- Experience in materials processing preferably with optical grinding and polishing.
-Knowledge and understanding of glass science.
- Experience in ceramics/materials processingtechniques commonly used in these fields.
- Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques and execution.
- Ability to develop independent research projects through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in effectivepresentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Desired Qualifications
- Experience using CNC grinding or polishing/grinding equipment.- Experience with predictive modeling and computational tools such as Mathcad, Matlab, Mathematica, and COMSOL.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: None required.

However, if your assignment is longer than 179 days cumulatively within a calendar year, you must go through the Personal Identity Verification process. Note: This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
