Job Description

The Communications Systems and Spectrum Division (CSSD) of the Information and Telecommunications Laboratory (ICL) is looking for Printed Circuit Board (PCB) layout experts to support current and anticipated advanced communications programs. CSSD performs a variety of advanced research and development including Radio Frequency (RF) hardware prototype development, clutter modeling, spectrum planning, network and wireless system design and many others. Custom platform design and PCB development is a critical capability to enable advanced research in areas such as 5G, millimeter wave and Software Defined Radios (SDR). PCB layout typically involves teams of 2-8 people working in either a traditional or agile development process to produce boards that form custom hardware for use in operational environments and test sets for use in laboratory environments.

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineer, Computer Engineer, Physics, Electromagnetics.

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineer, Computer Engineer, Physics, Electromagnetics¬†and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Masters degree in Electrical Engineer, Computer Engineer, Physics, Electromagnetics¬†and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelors degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Electrical Engineer, Computer Engineer, Physics, Electromagnetics.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Orcad or Altium (preferred both)
PCB Design:

  • Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) layout experience
  • High speed digital (Double Data Rae (DDR), Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCI-E), etc.)
  • Differential Pairs
  • Analog/RF layout with impedance matching
  • Board material selection
  • Fabrication instruction document generation

Schematic Design:

  • Component selection
  • Component integration
  • Schematic capture
  • Differential Pair Design
  • Layer Stack design

Preferred Qualifications

  • Clock and jitter design experience
  • RF tuning and debugging experience
  • Experience with network analyzer, Spec A, etc.

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Ability to obtain Secret Clearance upon hire
