Physical Chemist- Postdoctoral Researcher

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Livermore, CA 94550

Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!

Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where we apply science and technology to make the world a safer place; now one of 2019 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor!

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research to study fundamental reactive transport mechanisms and kinetics to develop predictive, quantitative models of performance for a range of programs within LLNL, including advanced energy storage and conversion materials, energetics, and aging materials and systems. You will actively participate and lead research to investigate the kinetics of gas/vapor sorption and reaction, degradation of materials in harsh environments, the effects of long-term chemical incompatibility, and fill understanding gaps in time dependent changes in material performance of both inorganic and organic materials in complex systems. This position is in the Materials Science Division.

Essential Duties
- Perform analysis of experimental data to extract relevant kinetic and thermodynamic parameters required for lifetime predictions, develop analytical techniques for studying reaction kinetics and aging in a variety of materials, and perform data analysis.
- Design and perform experiments using advanced instrumentation, for example; Thermal analysis, Gravimetric and manometric techniques, mass spectroscopy, laser spectroscopy.
- Perform research into one or more of the following: decomposition, degradation, aging, outgassing, diffusion, sorption/desorption and thermal properties of energetic materials, polymers, organic and inorganic solids, and metals.
- Develop and validate sorption/reaction mechanisms by comparing modeled results using the mechanism to experimental results from various analytical instruments.
- Model experimental data using custom and commercially available computational codes.
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Document research; write and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community, at working group meetings, and conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- Recent PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, or a related field.
- Knowledge and/or experience in the area of gas/vapor sorption, diffusion, thermodynamics, and/or chemical kinetics.
- Experience designing and performing quantitative experiments in one of the following areas: chemical kinetics, permeameter, diffusion, sorption, chemical reactions, spectroscopy, or equivalent experimental methods.
- Experience in using/writing MATLAB/python/LabView codes or equivalent code.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in well-written published papers and effectivepresentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with developing chemical kinetic reaction mechanisms and modeling.
- Experience in designing and building analytical instruments and associated controlling software.
- Experience and knowledge of experimental techniques and instruments involving dynamic vapor/gas sorption measurements.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: Note: This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
