Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in science and engineering on behalf of national security. We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher to join us in the Space Science and Applications Group (ISR-1) in the Intelligence and Research (ISR) division, which leads a variety of civilian and defense-related programs sponsored by NASA, DOE, DOD and other US agencies (space.lanl.gov). In support of these missions, we develop space-based charged particle, X-ray, gamma-ray and neutron detectors to measure natural and artificial radiation in space. We have an international reputation in the detection of nuclear phenomenologies. We are engaged in a number of basic science missions, including planetary exploration, gamma-ray astrophysics, and space situational awareness.


In this position, you will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team in a collaborative, technical research environment. Your skills and ideas will be applied to specific project goals with guidance from the senior staff. Our postdocs are key collaborators in the development of innovative solutions to important technical challenges and in implementing new technology. You will also be encouraged to present research and write internal and external publications.



  • Ph.D. in a field relevant to radiation detection (i.e., physics, nuclear physics, space physics, nuclear engineering, astronomy, astrophysics, etc.), completed within the past 5 years, or soon to be completed
  • Demonstrated experience in conducting original scientific research and working effectively on multi-disciplinary teams
  • Good interpersonal, written and oral communication skills


Desired Skills:

  • Experience in one or more of the following:
    • Experience in Design, modeling, simulation, or development of advanced sensing instruments for X-ray, gamma-ray, neutron or charge particle detection
    • Working in research accelerator or radiation calibration facilities
    • Hardware, modeling, simulation or data analysis from past or current planetary missions or astrophysics missions
    • Computational physics or computational transport theory
    • HPC computing
    • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance preferred
