We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in the synthesis of polymers, small molecules, and materials for carbon dioxide capture from point sources and direct air capture. You will actively participate in a multidisciplinary team performing materials synthesis and kinetic analysis of carbon capture and materials degradation processes. This position is in the Materials for Energy and Climate Security group of the Materials Science Division. Essential Duties
- Conduct research in carbon capture adsorbent structure and performance, including synthesis of polymers, organic small molecules, and porous materials, and characterize their degradation.
- Develop chemical reaction mechanisms for oxidation processes and innovate new molecular designs to resist oxidation.- Contribute to and actively participate in the conception, design, and execution of experiments to develop chemical mechanisms and measure reaction kinetics of amine-containing solid carbon capture adsorbent degradation processes.- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.- Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary and multi-institution team environment to accomplish research goals.- Maintain and establish laboratory protocols and best safety practices.- Document research; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, and present results within the DOE community, at project team meetings, and at conferences.- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- PhD in Polymer Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Fundamental knowledge and practical experience in polymer synthesis, organic small molecule synthesis, reaction mechanisms and kinetics, and chemical structure characterization.- Experience with amine chemistry, particularly preparation and analysis of molecules and polymers containing multiple amines.- Experience in analytical techniques and characterization methods (GPC, TGA, DSC, NMR, HPLC, GC-MS, LC-MS, etc.).- Ability as an innovative experimentalist with a broad range of experience in experimental design, techniques and execution.- Ability to develop independent research projects through publication of peer-reviewed literature.- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in effectivepresentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
- Initiative and interpersonal skills with desire and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with polymer or amine oxidation chemistry, mechanisms, and related chemical degradation phenomena.- Experience with air- and moisture-sensitive organic synthesis and polymerization techniques.- Familiarity with carbon capture systems and materials modeling techniques (atomistic to continuum).

Note: This is a two year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
