At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, a position as postdoc in 5G Time Synchronization is open for appointment from May 1, 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for 24 months. In the area of electronics engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the societal relevance of its research programmes. The Department of Electronic Systems employs more than 200 staff, of which about 40% are international, and about 90 enrolled PhD students. The Department hosts 620 students. The Department's excellent research infrastructures and facilities accentuate its global position in teaching and research. Department research centres around communication, antennas, control systems, signal processing, cybersecurity and acoustics. The Department plays an active role in translating discoveries and results into practical applications with industrial partners. Within its subject field, the Department provides teaching for several BSc and MSc programmes using a problem- and project-based learning model.

Job description

Absolute time synchronization is critical to many Industrial IoT (IIoT) services, such as industrial robotics, human-machine interaction, VR applications, remote surgery, and smart grids. Recently, in the near-final Release-16, 5G adds basic capability to time synchronize devices via the 5G wireless connection, e.g. as alternative or backup to situations where GPS is not available (e.g. deep indoor or in conjunction with attack on the GPS service). The vision for the postdoc project is to evolve the 5G solutions for time-synchronization towards supporting more advanced use-cases and at much higher performance. Key use-case is to focus on the time synchronization accuracy when provided by the 5G network. For the study, also collaborative time synchronization leveraging device-to-device protocols may be proposed and evaluated. Finally, positioning solutions may also be considered time-permitting.

The postdoc is expected to contribute to and investigate new solutions for improving time-synchronization via 5G, e.g. radio solutions to extend the coverage to deep indoor, radio design for better accuracy including high-speed and large-cell use-cases, and network protocol enhancements to allow for low-cost and low-power devices operation. It is expected that the study results are published at conferences and/or journals, as well as standardization contributions to bring enhancements for 5G. The work includes concept work as well as performance evaluations using both link and system-level simulations. The tools are made available to the postdoc.

The postdoc position is done in close collaboration with Nokia Bell Labs, Aalborg, Denmark.

The postdoc is expected to hold expertise in the area of wireless communications including some level of performance analysis. Any past experience with time-synchronization protocols or solutions, link or system simulations, C/C++ is a plus but not a pre-requisite.

Qualification requirements: 

Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
