At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, a position as postdoc in Signal Processing Techniques for Drone Surveillance using MIMO Radar. is open for appointment from March 1, 2021, or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is available for 24 months. In the area of electronics engineering, Aalborg University is known worldwide for its high academic quality and the societal relevance of its research programmes. The Department of Electronic Systems employs more than 200 staff, of which about 40 % are international, and about 90 enrolled PhD students.The Department hosts 620 students. The Department's excellent research infrastructures and facilities accentuate its global position in teaching and research. Department research centres around communication, antennas, control systems, signal processing, cyber security and acoustics. The Department plays an active role in translating discoveries and results in practical applications with industrial partners and through IPR. Within its subject field, the Department provides teaching for several BSc and MSc programmes using a problem- and project-based learning model.

Job description

With the increasing use of unmanned aerial vehicles or “drones” imposed stronger requirements for radar surveillance techniques used for critical infrastructure such as airports, powerplants, harbors, etc. small drones are particularly challenging to detect and track for such radar systems. As a response to this situation, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radars are emerging. While relatively new in a radar context, MIMO technologies are well studied and widely used for radio communications and a myriad of signal processing techniques have been developed for this purpose.

This project aims at utilizing and possibly extending techniques developed for MIMO radio communications to drone surveillance using MIMO radar. The potential research topics include, but are not limited to, tracking and localization methods, signal design for MIMO radar, interference management. The project will draw upon method from statistical signal processing, in particular estimation theory, information theory, compressed sensing and tools from radio channel characterization. The project is funded by the Thomas B. Thrige Foundation and carried out in collaboration with DTU-Space and a Danish radar manufacturer Terma A/S.

The project will take place at the Section for Wireless Communication Networks (WCN) in collaboration with the Connectivity Section (CNT), both at Department of Electronic Systems, Aalborg University. The WCN section conducts research in the field of wireless communications and network technologies. The section spans from application-inspired basic research to more application-oriented research where wireless communications play a major role. Specifically, the section has a wide experience in statistical signal processing for communications and, in particular, estimation methods for multipath models by techniques based on classical estimation, machine learning, and Monte Carlo methods.

You must have a PhD degree in statistical signal processing, wireless communications, machine learning, applied statistics or similar. Publications in relevant high-level journals are expected. Moreover, a high level of written and spoken English is also expected.

Qualification requirements: 

Appointment as Postdoc presupposes scientific qualifications at PhD–level or similar scientific qualifications. The research potential of each applicant will be emphasized in the overall assessment. Appointment as a Postdoc cannot exceed a period of four years in total at Aalborg University.
