Postdoctoral Appointee - Computational Physical Electronics

As a Postdoctoral Appointee in the field of computational physical electronics, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with experienced computational scientists on developing new simulation methods to extend existing quantum transport computer code\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Collaborate with a team of computational electronics scientists and semiconductor device physicists
+ Interact with experimental physicists and research engineers developing new nano\-devices and components that would employ them
+ Apply the quantum transport code to nano\-devices made using atomically precise fabrication and analyze the simulation results
+ Support publication efforts and presentations


+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in electrical engineering, physics, computer science, or a related discipline
+ Experience in solid\-state physics including the quantum physics of atoms and molecules
+ Experience in computational simulation of semiconductor devices
+ Experience with advanced scientific programming language\(s\)
+ Good interpersonal skills as evidenced by a record of publication of results in peer\-reviewed journals and external presentations at scientific conferences


+ Knowledge of electronic structure and quantum transport methods
+ Experience with a massively parallel, high performance computing environment
+ Experience with atomistic simulation methods for solid\-state qubits
+ Advanced C\+\+ programming and object\-oriented design
+ Experience with agile software development practices and quality software engineering
+ Experience developing and presenting effective technical presentations

Department Description:

The Non\-conventional Computing Technologies department \(1425\) pursues foundational research and development of:

+ non\-conventional approaches to energy\-efficient, classical digital computing, both multi\-user systems and special\-purpose, embedded systems;
+ quantum information processors that will provide exponential speed\-ups for selected computational problems;
+ novel computers such as neuro\-inspired designs that can execute neuromorphic algorithms with great facility \(in collaboration with the Data Driven and Neuromorphic Computing department, 1462\)\.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.

If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE\-granted security clearance, a pre\-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation\. Applicants for DOE\-granted security clearances must be U\.S\. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position\.

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years\. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment\.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance\.
