Postdoctoral Appointee - Data Scientist Experimental Design

Albuquerque, NM 87102

Posting Duration:

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the ‘posting date’. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

COVID-19 Vaccination Mandate:

Sandia demonstrates its commitment to public safety in the national interest by requiring that all new hires be fully vaccinated or have an approved medical or religious accommodation before commencing employment. The requirement also applies to those who are telecommuting and working virtually.

Any concerns about the ability to meet this requirement should be directed to HR Solutions at (505) 284-4700.

What Your Job Will Be Like:

The High Energy Density Physics Theory department works teams with other organizations in 1600 to design experiments on platforms including the Z machine. An important part of that process is analyzing the impact the data obtained will have on the models that underlie our simulation capability. We seek a specialist in data science that can help with the interpretation of HED experiments. The goal is to utilize this knowledge in the design stage in order to design the most insightful experiments given the data needs and to identify the most important avenues for investment in capabilities to enhance the experimental platforms, such as improved diagnostics or control. As an example of this, pulsed power driven experiments designed to test conductivity properties also naturally sample bulk material response. Being able to separate these effects would dramatically improve our ability to develop high quality material models.

Join our team and achieve your goals while making a difference!

Qualifications We Require:

+ PhD in mathematics, chemistry, physics, computer science or a related field

+ A track record of strong scholarly communication demonstrated through peer reviewed publications and conference presentations.

+ Experience developing / applying data science techniques to analyze experimental results.

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

+ Demonstrated ability to work as a part of a broad team

+ Knowledge of High Pressure Physics

+ Knowledge of Plasma Physics

+ Proficiency with hydrodynamical or multi-physics simulation tools

+ Knowledge of physics models for multi-physics simulation such as equation of state, conductivity, opacity or other transport properties

About Our Team:

Research within the High Energy Density Physics (HEDP) Theory Department 1641 spans a broad range of topics with a common theme of gaining an improved understanding of physical processes at normal as well as extreme conditions of high densities and/or temperatures, pressures, magnetic fields, and rapidly changing states. Major efforts of the department include developing simulations codes and high-fidelity material models with predictive capabilities together with designing dynamic material and plasma physics experiments for Sandia's Z Machine. Our research has both applied and fundamental dimensions – for example in the areas of electronic structure, shock physics, material science, planetary science and astrophysics.

Current research areas include Dynamic Material properties/NNSA Science Campaigns, Quantum Monte Carlo within Basic Energy Sciences/DOE Office of Science, Sandia Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD), Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC), and the program for fundamental science experiments on the Z machine. The department has active collaborations with research groups at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and Argonne National Laboratory as well as with academic institutions in the US and in Europe, for example University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, Harvard University, University of Rostock in Germany, Princeton University, Cornell University, and University of Texas at Austin.

Security Clearance:

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO:

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

Position Information:

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
