Postdoctoral Appointee - In-Situ TEM Corrosion

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee with a focus in quantitative in\-situ TEM studies of nanostructured materials\. In this role, you will have the opportunity to interact with internationally recognized collaborators and to engage in creative research in many areas of in\-situ TEM, including new capability demonstration\.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Study nanoscale corrosion mechanisms for steel structures utilizing TEM techniques, some in combination with in\-situ imaging/diffraction
+ Research the changes in environmental and chemical conditions that may change the nanoscale mechanisms of corrosion initiation and scale product formation
+ Work closely with an advisor to conduct the in\-situ measurements and analyze the complementary data
+ Contribute to scientific publications and presentations
+ Utilize sample preparation techniques including: clean room preparation, focused ion\-beam, atomic layer deposition, electron beam lithography, metal deposition, and electrochemical etching
+ Utilize analysis and characterization techniques including: scanning electron microscopy characterization, electron backscattered diffraction, high resolution imaging, precession electron diffraction, energy filtered TEM imaging, energy dispersive x\-ray spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and data/image processing


+ PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in physics, materials science, chemistry or a related discipline
+ Experience in electron microscopy characterization and analysis techniques
+ Experience in crystallography
+ Good interpersonal skills as evidenced by a record of publication of results in peer\-reviewed journals and external presentations at scientific conferences


+ Experience in one or more of the following areas:

- Nanobeam Electron Diffraction
- Precession Electron Diffraction
- X\-ray Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy Mapping
- Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy Mapping
- TEM Tilt\-Series
- TEM Tomography
- In\-situ liquid\-cell imaging
- In\-situ electrochemistry
- In\-situ EELS & EFTEM
+ Experience in working on multiple projects at a time
+ Interest in writing manuscripts and presenting at conferences
+ Programming/software experience with Python, Mathematica, Matlab, LabView, JEMS, and/or QSTEM
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DoE security clearance

Department Description:

The Nanostructure Physics department \(01881\) is one of two departments at Sandia that are a part of The Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies \(CINT\)\. CINT is a Department of Energy/Office of Science Nanoscale Science Research Center operating as a national user facility committed to establishing the scientific principles that govern the design, performance, and integration of nanoscale materials\. Through its core facility in Albuquerque and gateway facility at Los Alamos, CINT provides users from academia, industry, and government labs, open access to the tools and expertise needed to explore the continuum from scientific discovery to the integration of nanostructures into the micro\- and macro world\. Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy \(DOE\)\-granted security clearance\.

Sandia will conduct a pre\-employment drug testing, and a pre\-employment background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record checks, and employment and education verifications\. Further, employees in New Mexico must pass a U\.S\. Air Force background screen for access to the work site\. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, rendering the inability to perform the duties assigned and resulting in termination of employment\.

If hired without a clearance, and one subsequently becomes required or you bid on positions that require a DOE\-granted security clearance, a pre\-processing background review that includes personal reference checks, law enforcement record and credit checks, and employment and education verifications may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation\. Applicants for DOE\-granted security clearances must be U\.S\. citizens and be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate DOE security clearance as required for the position\.

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years\. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment\.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance\.
