This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.

You could be the Postdoctoral Appointee we are seeking to join our diverse team. You will be working on electrochemical materials chemistry and battery development for the Energy Storage Technology and Systems Department.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Contribute to a multidisciplinary electrochemical and materials-focused research effort
+ Perform both independent and team-based daily experimental research, especially as it pertains to energy storage materials testing
+ Publish in innovative research high-level peer-reviewed leading technical journals
+ Present state of the art research at technical conferences and meetings

Required:

+ You will have a PhD, conferred within 5 years prior to employment, in electrochemistry, materials science, chemistry, chemical engineering or a closely related science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) field.
+ Laboratory experience in electrochemistry, electrochemical characterization, separator characterization and battery assembly and testing
+ Record of independent research, publications and conference presentations
+ Able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance

+ Record of interdisciplinary research collaborations
+ Extensive laboratory experience including a broad background in electrochemical materials synthesis and testing
+ Experience with chemical and electrochemical characterization techniques as well as a strong background in laboratory-scale battery assembly and testing
+ Technical experience and a proven publication record in the area of battery testing, ideally related to fuel cells, flow battery or similar batteries chemistries
+ Knowledgeable about adapting electrochemical testing procedures and materials to accommodate new technical developments
+ Familiarity with and a willingness to explore connections between materials science and electrochemistry
+ Technical skills related to programming, data processing, and instrumental setup
+ Strong laboratory skills relevant for energy storage materials R&D
+ Ability to engage and to contribute to multiple programs
+ Ability to interact with team members of diverse technical backgrounds
+ Desire to conduct independent, focused research.
+ Backgrounds indicative of self-motivation with the ability to communicate and perform effectively in dynamic team setting

Department Description:

The Nanoscale Sciences Department conducts collaborative leading-edge research that advances the understanding of materials at the nanoscale and enables the collaborative development of creative solutions for Sandia's broad and evolving National Security and Energy Missions. Our research activities have broad impact; and typically generate peer-reviewed, high-profile journal publications and presentations at professional scientific meetings. Our main research focus is directed along three thrusts:

99. Electrochemical Materials Science and Applications (including energy storage and corrosion)
99. Magnetic, Dielectric and Electronic Materials Science and Applications (including ferroics and composites)
99. Nanostructured Materials Science and Applications (i.e., for hazardous materials capture/storage, sensing, membranes, water treatment, and catalysis)

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) L-level security clearance.

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.
