What Your Job Will Be Like:



Our team is seeking a hardworking Postdoctoral candidate to support the synthesis, processing, and fabrication of composites materials. The position will entail development and characterization of novel nanoparticle-loaded composite materials. This position will support a broad range of Sandia missions and materials that have industrial applications. The job will require a range of functions, including chemistry, material synthesis, processing, fabrications as well as characterization of the subsequent products. All of this work is conducted with a high priority on maintaining a safe and productive research laboratory environment.



On any given day, you may be called on to:





+ Develop and characterize of organic, inorganic, and composites materials using benchtop, hood, and air-less (Molds, Schlenk line, and glovebox) processes



+ Perform materials synthesis and characterization (bulk, meso, and nano) from tailored and commercial precursors



+ Evaluate material functionality, life, and performance in response to extreme environments



+ Operate with a focus on developing a detailed understanding of numerous analytical tool for chemical and material characterization (PXRD, SCXRD FTIR, NMR (multinuclear), Raman, TGA/DSC, SEM, mechanical, and other necessary analytical instrumentation)



+ Coordinate with other SNL and university research teams on projects



+ Set up and monitor chemical reactions for nanomaterial (solvothermal and solution precipitation routes), thin film (spin-, drop-coating), and bulk powders



+ Maintain laboratory operations, including coordinating equipment operation and upkeep



+ Collaborating and contributing in a dynamic scientific environment while developing as an independent researcher



+ Interacting with and supporting numerous students, scientists and engineers engaged in materials research, troubleshooting, and failure analysis





Qualifications We Require:





+ Possess, or are pursuing, a PhD degree in chemistry, physics, material science, industrial and manufacturing engineering or related field



+ Experience working in laboratory environment



+ Experience with synthesis/manufacturing of fiber reinforced composite, nanocomposites or related materials



+ Experience in mechanical/stress testing of composite materials or basic composite and coating characterizing



+ Able to acquire and maintain a Q-level security clearance





Qualifications We Desire:





+ Experience working collaboratively in team settings



+ Experience with pressure systems (pressurized gas delivery, regulation and safety)



+ Experience and laboratory skills in Chemistry and Material Science in an industrial setting



+ Effective interpersonal and oral/written communication skills



+ Experience in and/or ability to prioritize tasks to enable work on multiple projects simultaneously



+ Detailed approach and ability and desire to work independently



+ Strong dedication to responsive project work with a focus on quality, safety, collaboration, and teamwork





About Our Team:



The Advanced Materials Laboratory Department, 1815, conducts research and development in a wide range of novel materials and composites development using various chemistries and materials and processing techniques to advance scientific understanding and provide practical solutions to the needs of a wide variety of Sandia customers and external entities. Specifically, activities in our research groups include; synthesizing new precursors (organic and inorganic) and surface functional groups (organic ligands), understanding/processing these precursors to materials (nano-scale particles, thin film, and bulk materials), fabrication and develop of nanocomposites/fiber reinforced composite. Research and development includes: synthesis of compounds of alkali, alkaline earth, transition, main group, lanthanide, and actinide organometallic and metalorganic precursors, organic chemistry, processing into different forms (bulk, meso-, nanoscale), conversion into nanoparticles, development complex composites, rein filtration of composites to achieve densification and particle incorporation, vacuum bagging and mold process of composites, evaluation pressure and temperature effect of curing, pyrolysis, and sintering of composites. Our customers include all of Sandia’s mission areas and numerous external collaborators. Our laboratory facilities are located at the Advanced Materials Laboratory, a leased facility on the campus of the University of New Mexico. This geographical advantage allows us to work closely with students and faculty at community colleges and University of New Mexico, as well as other universities located throughout the United States.

Security Clearance:

Position Information:



This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.



Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
