Postdoctoral Appointee - Materials Science in support of Wind Energy

This postdoctoral position is a temporary position for up to one year, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to five additional years. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.

Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.

We are seeking a dedicated and hardworking Postdoctoral Appointee. You will perform modeling of composite materials at the micro-mechanics level to understand how the design and processing of the fiber relates to the final mechanical properties of the composite. Modeling will be performed to inform material design and processing of carbon fiber materials, and results will be validated against mechanical test data within the project. The high-fidelity modeling will be used to derive lower-order representations of material design decisions to understand the usefulness of these novel materials in wind turbine blade design, in static and fatigue failures, and in tension and compression.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Work with a dynamic team of researchers and wind energy analysts working to tackle challenging problems that move the wind industry forward in support of the Department of Energy mission;
+ Use a variety of computational tools to simulate composite material failure at the micro-mechanics level;
+ Conduct simulations in commercial finite element analysis software;
+ Analyze failure modes in composite materials to understand how to improve mechanical properties;
+ Validate model results using experimental test data of composite materials in static and fatigue failure;
+ Communicate research results effectively through written, oral, and other creative media methods to appropriate partners, including the funding customer.

Required:

+ PhD in Engineering, Physics or a relevant discipline.

Desired:

+ Research experience in modeling of micro-mechanics of composite materials;
+ Understanding of composite material design and processing, particularly for carbon fiber materials;
+ Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to identify research objectives and develop clear solutions to complex problems while using sound judgment in drawing conclusions;
+ Proven ability to work well in teams with diverse skills and backgrounds and be proactive and creative in solving problems that arise;
+ Excellent time-management skills including the ability to prioritize work and set and meet reasonable deadlines.

Department Description:

The Wind Energy Technologies Department performs research and development to improve performance, lower costs, and accelerate the deployment of wind technologies. This department is responsible for all aspects of wind turbine blade design, system reliability, system integration, and environmental evaluations. For blades, the team performs R&D on materials, airfoil design, structural analysis and design, and manufacturing processes and partners with universities in the areas of composite materials, aero-dynamics, probabilistic analysis, and embedded control sensors and actuators. Department activities range from computer based design and analysis, lab testing of components, to full scale testing of wind blades at the SWiFT test site, near Lubbock, TX. The department has been assigned the leadership role by the DOE for wind system reliability, which focuses on tracking reliability performance of the US wind turbine fleet and directs appropriate resources toward improvements in turbine technology This department also leads basic and applied research efforts, sponsored by the DOE Wind and Water Power Technologies Office, supporting development of tools and methods to improve device performance. Through partnerships with industry and public presentation of results, Sandia serves an important role in energy surety for the nation.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia and will require uncleared access for greater than 179 during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
