What Your Job Will Be Like:



We are seeking a Postdoctoral Appointee - Synthetic Polymer Chemistry to join the Organic Materials Science team conducting research related to national and global security. You will be part of a team of scientists and contribute to at least two high impact experimental programs. Work includes developing new responsive organic materials using polymer synthesis techniques. You will be expected to contribute and execute innovative research ideas, present your research at various internal and external forums, and publish your research in peer-reviewed journals. Be provided opportunities to seek funding for additional research topics with the guidance and support of your staff mentors. This postdoctoral position is an excellent opportunity for anyone seeking to transition from their PhD research to a fast-paced research and development environment in a National Lab setting that provides ample chances for both personal and professional enrichment.







On any given day, you may be called on to:





+ Plan, synthesize, and characterize novel organic compounds and polymers



+ Formulate polymer thermoset materials



+ Characterize polymer materials using: differential scanning calorimetry, thermomechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, NMR, FTIR, Raman, XPS, SEM, GPC, and rheological testing



+ Communicate and detail findings in reports and peer-reviewed journals



+ Work both independently and in a team environment



+ Mentor undergraduate and/or graduate interns in an R&D setting





Qualifications We Require:





+ Possess, or are pursuing, a PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or similar field



+ Possess a bachelor's degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM)



+ Experience in research involving any of the following: organic synthesis, polymer synthesis, materials science, or a closely related field



+ Proven oral and written communication skills as evidenced through a record of scientific presentations and peer-reviewed publications



+ Able to acquire and maintain a DOE L-level security clearance





Qualifications We Desire:





+ PhD in Synthetic Chemistry (organic and/or polymer)



+ Experience with air-free techniques such as Schlenk lines, gloveboxes, and vacuum apparatuses



+ Experience in the preparation and purification of organic compounds and polymers



+ Experience with materials characterization and mechanical testing, including: thermal analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, thermomechanical analysis, thermogravimetric analysis, dynamic mechanical analysis, NMR, FTIR, Raman, XPS, SEM, GPC, and/or rheological testing



+ Dedication to laboratory safety



+ Proven track record of interacting with all members of the team, strong documentation and organizational habits, and communication methods that enable cooperation and success within a dynamic and complex work environment





About Our Team:



The Organic Materials Science Department researches and develops new and advanced materials and processing strategies to meet a wide range of specialized applications in nuclear weapons, national security and industrial applications. Our department is dedicated to scientific discovery, creativity, innovation and practical solutions for our diverse customers. The department specializes in aging science and predictive performance of polymers, synthetic organic and polymer chemistry, thermal, mechanical, chemical, and physical characterization of organic materials, and advanced manufacturing of polymers. We perform reliability studies for polymers with an emphasis on understanding degradation mechanisms, structure-property relationships, and performance margins. Current areas of R&D in the department include: developing novel encapsulant materials, creating new thermoset chemistries for additive manufacturing, developing innovative NMR techniques to understand transport phenomena in polymers, measuring and optimizing electrical performance of polymer dielectrics, elucidating the interdependency of chemical change and polymer physics over long timeframes, creating reversible and degradable chemistries, understanding polymer interfacial properties and adhesion, measuring and predicting radiation effects on polymers, monitoring of reactive thermoset cure kinetics, and quantifying permeation behavior and spatially dependent degradation processes. We perform a complete spectrum of chemical, structural, thermal, rheological, and mechanical characterization of polymeric materials that must perform over 30 - 40 year lifetimes.

Security Clearance:

Position Information:
