Science and Technology on a Mission!

For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

Is deterrence effective? Can it be made more so? These questions have gained renewed importance as the security environment has eroded with the return to rivalry among major powers and the rise of nuclear-arming regional challengers. In a more multipolar security environment, the challenge of tailoring U.S. deterrence strategies to particular actors and problems has grown more substantial. To help address this challenge, a better understanding of deterrence is required. Toward this end, social science techniques have something important to contribute. Rigorously applied, these techniques can develop and test useful hypotheses. Their effectiveness depends on close coordination with the practitioners of deterrence in the military and civilian defense communities. This Post Doc is aimed at exploring deterrence effectiveness with social science techniques in partnership with military and civilian stakeholders. This position is in the Center for Global Security Research (CGSR) within the Directors Office.
