Postdoctoral Researcher - Materials Development and Device Fabrication

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
Livermore, CA 94550

Join us and make YOUR mark on the World!

Come join Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) where we apply science and technology to make the world a safer place; now one of 2020 Best Places to Work by Glassdoor!

We have an opening for a postdoctoral researcher in materials development and device fabrication for energy storage. You will play a major role in testing new additively manufactured porous materials as electrodes and membranes for batteries and supercapacitors, requiring extensive collaboration with chemists, chemical engineers, and materials scientists engaged in discovery, synthesis, and characterization of porous materials and inks for 3D printing, design of electrochemical cells, and electrochemical performance studies. This position is in the Materials Energy & Climate Security Group within the Materials Science Division.
Essential Duties
- Fabricate electrochemical cells, such as half-cells, coin cells, pouch cells, and/or symmetric supercapacitor cells for electrochemical studies.
- Evaluate cell performance with electrochemical techniques, including cycle performance testing and rate performance testing.
- Characterize membrane and electrode materials and assemblies by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray spectroscopy (EDS, XRF, XPS), and electron microscopy (SEM, TEM).
- Design improvements to cell materials and assemblies based on measured properties and performance.
- Collaborate with scientists in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
- Pursue independent but complementary research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
- Document research and analyze data; publish papers in peer-reviewed journals and disseminate key results within the DOE community and at conferences.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
- PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
- Experience with fabrication, testing, or design of devices and materials for energy storage.
- Experience in electrochemistry, including cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
- Familiarity with porous materials, such as porous polymers, porous carbons, intercalation compounds, metal-organic frameworks, or covalent organic frameworks, etc.
- Ability to think independently, plan, and execute applied research, interpret data, and communicate results.- Ability to develop independent research projects through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills as reflected in effectivepresentations at seminars, meetings and/or teaching lectures.
- Strong desire to work in applied research and in a multidisciplinary team environment.
Desired Qualifications
- Familiarity with electrical conductivity testing.
- Familiarity with diffusivity measurements, such as lithium ion diffusion.
- Familiarity with characterization of porous materials, such as porosimetry or surface area analysis.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: None required.

However, if your assignment is longer than 179 days cumulatively within a calendar year, you must go through the Personal Identity Verification process. This process includes completing an online background investigation form and receiving approval of the background check. (This process does not apply to foreign nationals.)
