Job Title: Power Electronic Engineer for DER Integration Research


Location: Knoxville, TN


Job Summary and Description:

Provides technical support for EPRI research in the area of distributed energy resource (DER) interconnection and integration on the power distribution system. Technical focus areas include modeling and simulation of smart inverters, analyzing power system impact of higher penetration of inverter-based DER, investigating power quality issues, and characterization of inverter dynamics.  The position may also have increasing responsibility for contributing to development of research proposals, managing projects, and communicating results to internal and external stakeholders.

Performs complex engineering/ scientific analysis with moderate direction and supervision. Works directly with EPRI staff and moderate interaction with members and industry.

  • Conducts technical searches and analyzes information in support of the project team.
  • May conduct independent research.
  • Assists Project/Program managers in assessing customer needs, formulating technical approaches, preparing proposals, technical publications/papers, and making presentations.



  • Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field or equivalent experience required
  • Master's and Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering strong desired


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Must have satisfied requirements of entry level engineer/scientist and have 2-3 years of engineering experience or comparable work/educational experience required.
  • Intermediate verbal and written communication skills
  • Present research externally
  • Understand how work fits across technical area
  • Requires supervision and guidance to conduct specific research tasks and complete projects
  • Works closely with contractors or staff to complete project research
  • May participate in multiple projects
  • Individual contributor
  • Three-to-four years of utility or industry experience in power electronics or power system is required
  • PhD in power electronics is preferred and for suitable candidate job experience requirement might be relaxed
  • Demonstrated experience of power electronic circuit modeling and simulation
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Matlab, Python, EMTP-RV and similar other tools
  • Knowledge of power system fundamentals (power flow, grounding, protection, etc.) and challenges of DER integration
  • Proven skill in analyzing, technical writing, and communicating research results
  • Exercise good judgement, diligence, and attention to detail
