SEL's Power Engineering team in Government Services is looking for a Power Systems Engineer. If you are passionate about power systems and are curious, creative, and research-minded, then we invite you to apply.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


1. Research and document new ideas and write new product specifications.

2. Develop application notes, white papers, technical reports, and conference and journal papers on innovative applications or ideas.

3. Conduct competitive product analysis.

4. Maintain a working knowledge of SEL products or solutions and a perspective of industry practices/trends.

5. Protect SEL Intellectual Property by writing patent and copyright applications.

6. Follow and apply SEL Values, Principles of Operations, and World Class Manufacturing Principles.

7. Understand. Create. Simplify.

8. Other duties as assigned.


Required Qualifications

US citizenship

B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related or equivalent experience

2+ years' working knowledge of at least one of the following:

  • electric power systems and practices and philosophies
  • utility automation and control systems
  • utility grade communication schemes
  • digital signal processing practices
  • statistical analysis and data analytic techniques

Excellent technical training skills

Experience with simulation software to analyze power system transients, load flow, and short circuit studies

Knowledge of power system analysis, power system protection and power system stability

Experience with analytical tool (Matlab, Simulink, etc)

Willing to travel 25%

Strong writing, documentation, and speaking skills
Ability to learn new skills and assume new responsibilities
Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
Background check results satisfactory to SEL
Negative drug test result(s)

Preferred Qualifications

Cross-disciplinary knowledge of:

  • electric power systems and practices and philosophies
  • utility automation and control systems
  • utility grade communication schemes
  • digital signal processing practices


Physical Requirements

Sit up to 8 hours a day

Vision correctable to 20/30 or better

Ability to communicate via telephone

Use computer keyboard device
