We have multiple openings for Precision/Mechanical Engineers to join our Precision Systems & Manufacturing Group. You will apply precision engineering principles to contribute to projects ranging from novel research initiatives to supporting stockpile stewardship programs. These efforts will include the execution of strategies for quantifying the uncertainty of new and existing technologies ranging from additive manufacturing to dimensional metrology, and beyond. You will also become familiar with the ongoing priorities of the programs being supported and assist in developing proposals for future contributions to the success of program objectives. These positions are in the Material Engineering Division (MED), within the Engineering Directorate.
These positions will be filled at either the SES.1 or SES.2 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
Essential Duties
- Contribute to the development, implementation, and qualification of unique metrology and instrumentation applications.- Participate as a team member with other engineers and technicians, collaborating with senior engineers within the group to learn best practices and become familiar with LLNL and vendor capabilities in fabrication and metrology.- Work with project engineers to gather requirements, generate specifications and drawings.- Work as a team member composed of other engineers and technicians to fabricate and measure parts.- Contribute to providing engineering solutions for the machining and inspection processes used in the fabrication of precision components, including tooling design, procedure development, and uncertainty analysis.- Solve technical issues of limited complexity related to machining operations that require analysis of readily identifiable factors and the use of established methods.
- Under general direction present technical approaches, project plans, and documentation to peers and program managers, providing regular updates on risks to quality and schedule.- Perform other duties as assigned.In Addition at the SES.2 Level
- Solve moderately complex to complex technical issues related to machining operations that require in depth analysis of broadly defined factors and methods.
- Utilize rigorous error budgets, kinematic (exact) constraint, and other moderately complex to complex precision engineering principles to qualify processes, provide quantified design enhancements as needed to meet capability requirements, and oversee the fabrication and implementation of these designs.
- Develop and present research and development proposals.
- Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, Precision Engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and prior relevant experience.
- Experience in the application of uncertainty analysis and error budgeting, with the ability to apply these to both new and existing processes/equipment.
- Fundamental knowledge of metrology principles and technologies, as well as their related application spaces.
- Experience with responsibility for research, design, analysis, prototyping, and early fabrication/assembly/test.
- Fundamental engineering knowledge associated with machining and inspection operations and experience interpreting specifications and mechanical drawings.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a multi-disciplinary team with multiple levels of technical staff, managers, and vendors.
- Effective organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Sufficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information and provide advice to management.
In Addition at the SES.2 Level

- PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Precision Engineering, or the equivalent combination of education and prior relevant experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge of Precision Engineering principles and experience and knowledge in the design and evaluation of precision machines, systems, and processes.
- Experience presenting research.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in the design and evaluation of precision systems/ mechanisms.
- Strong interpersonal skills with an emphasis on developing relationships and building long-term collaborations with internal and/or external sponsors.

Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test. This includes testing for use of marijuana as Federal Law applies to us as a Federal Contractor.

Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, wewill initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if youmeet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note: This is a Career Indefinite position. Lab employees and external candidates may be considered for this position.
