The Cybersecurity, Information Protection, and Hardware Evaluation Research Lab (CIPHER) of the Georgia Tech Research Institute is seeking an experienced Cloud Architect/Developer with 7+ years of experience that will assist our customers in architecting, developing, and re-engineering applications that can fully leverage the Cloud. We are looking for an architect to innovate solutions and solve technical problems using the latest cloud computing technologies. 

Job Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement scalable, highly available application solutions that leverage common cloud services
  • Architect and develop applications to be cloud optimized
  • Engage as a technical SME and thought leader alongside stakeholders, product management, product development, and infrastructure teams
  • Provide deep software development knowledge with regards to cloud architectures, design patterns, and programming
  • Advise and implement cloud best practices
  • Participate both as an infrastructure and application development specialist

By 30 Days In

  • Become an expert on application missions and problem sets by interviewing and observing users or product teammates
  • Support product management and product development by helping them understand architecture re-engineering challenges
  • Learn and understand the vision for our products. Evaluate and offer ideas for how the cloud will impact product visions.
  • Learn and understand our development process for feature releases, team communication, and other processes

By 60 Days In

  • Identify quick win improvements within existing application architectures
  • Begin having credible conversations with engineers about technical design trade-offs between integration, availability, scalability, and performance
  • Research new or alternative technologies and prototype solutions that can be leveraged to modernize, increase performance and reinforce system security
  • Collaborate with engineering on product development during design

By 90 Days In

  • Cultivate understanding U.S. Government compliance and security standards, including NIST SP 800-53, ICD 503, JSIG, and RMF
  • Begin having credible conversations with information assurance and Government assessors about trade-offs between security controls, compliance, and performance
  • Develop and evangelize infrastructure/cloud vision and road-map

Education & Length of Experience

Research Engineer/Scientist I

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related fields of study.

Research Engineer/Scientist II

  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related fields of study and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
  • A Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related fields of study and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or related fields of study.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  • Software development or application engineering with recent coding experience in two or more of the following languages: Java, JavaScript, AngularJS, .NET, Python, PHP, or Ruby
  • Exposure to Agile development methodologies
  • Experience with Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery (CI/CD)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success as a software developer, application architect, product manager, or consultant working with various platforms
  • Demonstrated experience architecting, designing, and developing applications on the AWS platform
  • Demonstrated experience designing and building applications using Containers and serverless technologies
  • Experience architecting highly available systems that utilize load balancing, horizontal scalability and high availability
  • Exposure to DevOps practices such as Infrastructure as Code (IaC), Continuous Integration (CI), and automated deployments
  • Experience with Continuous Integration (CI) tools (e.g. Jenkins)
  • Experience with Configuration Management platforms (e.g. Chef, Puppet, Salt, or Ansible)
  • Experience presenting to customers, stakeholders, or senior leaders
  • Strong practical application development experience on Linux
  • Strong collaboration skills
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Decisive decision maker
  • A continual learner that stays up-to-date on the latest technologies and design trends
  • Entrepreneurial, with a proven ability to take ownership and responsibility of tasks
  • Active AWS Certification
  • Active Security Clearance

Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

Ability to obtain Top Secret Clearance upon hire
