The City of Tacoma is accepting applications for a Professional Engineer in the Building Permit Review Group within the Planning and Development Services Department.  We are seeking an outgoing, highly motivated person who is interested in joining our dynamic Building Permit Team.

Position Details:
This position's responsibilities will include plan review of building permits for new buildings and structures, additions and remodels, and alterations.  Plan review will also include review of complex mechanical and plumbing systems, fire and life safety and building and site accessibility.  As a representative of the Building Group, the Professional Engineer in this position will meet with potential developers and owners to discuss their projects and provide input and interpretation on designs and compliance with Washington State and City of Tacoma building codes and standards.  This position will review and comment on commercial submittals and approve construction documents for permit issuance. This includes a variety of project types including new commercial buildings and tenant improvements for commercial structures, restaurants, offices, retail and other multifamily and commercial uses.

The position will require a strong ability to communicate technical information related to building codes and construction with both professionals and non-professionals involved in permitting. Also, this person will be required to identify alternatives in a collaborative manner while working under tight deadlines and shall possess strong problem-solving skills.  Best performers in this position have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work using empathy to provide excellent customer service.

  • Demonstrated ability to read and understand engineering and architectural design plans, technical reports and calculations
  • Excellent customer service skills, specifically:
    • Responding to requests in a timely manner
    • Reviewing permit submittals quickly, accurately, and thoroughly
    • Providing clear explanations of recommendations
  • Time management and leadership skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively, cooperatively, and communicate frequently
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • This is a professional environment with most activities occurring in an office setting with periodic field visits to active construction sites. 
  • Position may require driving, sitting, standing, walking or climbing for long periods of time.

Requirements

Qualifications:

Bachelor of Science Degree in mechanical or civil engineering, or a related field from an accredited four-year college or university,

AND

A Professional Engineering License at time of appointment with maintenance thereafter.

PREFERRED AND HIGHLY DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Mechanical, Structural or Civil Engineer with experience in various aspects of building design and construction:
    • Ability to review commercial and multifamily residential permit submittals for compliance with the building, mechanical, plumbing, and energy codes, as well as national standards, state amendments, and city ordinances
    • Technical expertise related to complex mechanical and plumbing systems; and
    • Understanding of complex structural analysis and construction for various types of commercial buildings


LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER LEGAL REQUIREMENTS:
Current Washington State Driver's License at time of appointment.
