Protein Engineering - Postdoctoral Researcher

NOTE: This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research in the field of protein engineering and synthetic biology for the biosynthesis of DOE relevant compounds and biomaterials. You will actively participate in research to redesign proteins to achieve new biochemistries and to develop feasible engineered gene pathways toward production of relevant compounds. This position is in the Systems and Synthetic biology group in the Biosciences and Biotechnology Division.

In this role you will

  • Conduct fundamental and applied research in microbial synthetic biology for the biosynthesis of DOE relevant compounds and biomaterials.
  • Develop cutting-edge, high-throughput directed evolution approaches to redesign enzymes to accept alternative substrates.
  • Employ synthetic biology to build novel biosynthetic pathways toward DOE relevant compounds using redesigned enzymes.
  • Develop in vivo and in vitro assays to characterize redesigned enzymes and pathways and assess functionality.
  • Develop research plans, generate results, and publish peer-reviewed papers.
  • Regularly interact with a broad spectrum of computational and experimental scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences, seminars, and/or technical meeting.
  • Work with other scientists to write proposals and expand our program into new areas aligned with your expertise and interests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • PhD in Biochemistry, Bioengineering, Biological Sciences, or a relevant field with a strong emphasis in biochemistry, protein engineering, and synthetic biology.
  • Expertise in protein biochemistry and molecular biology.
  • Experience and knowledge in protein engineering and/or directed evolution to alter function.
  • Experience in designing and constructing biosynthetic gene pathways in model organisms.
  • Experience and knowledge in enzyme assays and/or assessing enzyme function.
  • Ability to develop independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peer-reviewed literature.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment and present and explain technical information.

Qualifications we desire

  • Experience with synthetic biology/gene editing in E. coli and/or yeast
  • Experience with HPLC and/or GC analysis of analytes.
  • Experience in protein purification and enzyme assays and with generating, sequencing, and analyzing protein variant libraries.
