Qualification and Test Lead Engineer (Experienced)

We are seeking a motivated and innovative R&D S&E, Mechanical Engineer to join our team. As the Qualification and Test Lead Engineer for both the W80-4 Boost GTS PRT as well as the Work GTS PRT, you will be working directly with the PRT Leads and overseeing and in some cases executing development testing. This work scope includes planning and owning the design qualification testing, assuring testing fidelity, and analyzing results from Sandia, KCNSC, and SRS. Additionally, this position includes a programmatic rolein coordinating with the SNL GTS Quality engineers, GTS sub-component development SMEs and Production Agency Quality teams to meet PRT Review and Engineering Evaluation deliverables.

On any given day, you may:

+ Work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary project teams (including internal and external partners) to design, develop, fabricate and qualify components for use in specific projects and programs
+ Apply integrated technical judgmentwhich requires using the scientific method to recognize and formulate problems, to collect data through observation and experimentation, and to formulate and test hypothesesto anticipate, innovate, and deliver solutions to the Laboratories' missions.
+ Root your work in the fundamentals of science and engineering while applying a deep understanding of engineering and scientific principles. Create and apply scientific theories and laws and engineering methods used within scientific and engineering fields to develop or demonstrate new designs, concepts, materials, machines, products, processes, or systems.
+ Use physical and computational simulation, analysis, and evaluation as inherent activities of development.


+ Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Civil, Chemical, Manufacturing or Aeronautical Engineering, Material Science, Physics, or related field, with at least six years relevant experience; Master's degree in related field, with at least four years' relevant experience; or Ph.D. in these disciplines with at least two years relevant experience
+ Ability to travel up to 15% of the time.
+ Currently possess a U.S. DOE Q security clearance.


+ Leadership and project management skills
+ Experience in managing project plans, project schedules, project deliverables, project costs, and technical and programmatic risks
+ Experience with Product Realization (Teams, Process)
+ Experience with production qualification in the NNSA environment
+ Experience with commercial 3D CAD package (e.g. SolidWorks, CREO)
+ Experience with experimental methods, data acquisition and analysis
+ Familiarity with manufacturing and related production processes

Department Description:

The Gas Transfer System (GTS) Engineering Department is a group of engineers, material scientists, and technologists who are responsible for the development and maintenance of gas transfer systems for national security programs. Our work has three major components: scientific research and advanced component development, engineering support of existing systems, design and qualification of systems for National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) modernization programs. Responsibilities include high-pressure gas reservoir design, explosive component design, development of welding technologies, and investigating the effect of hydrogen isotopes in various materials. The department operates a high-pressure testing facility and a welding/brazing facility. Our personnel routinely interact with other Sandia engineering and research groups, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, production agencies (located in Kansas City, Savannah River, and Texas), the and the Department of Defense (DOD).

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start.
