What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking an Aeronautical Engineer to provide technical leadership for projects relating to remote sensing and satellite systems. This job involves working with multi-disciplinary teams to devise satellite missions responsive to national security needs.

Successful candidates will use their backgrounds in aerospace engineering or experience in space hardware design, integration, and operations to develop creative solutions to unique national security challenges. Key skills for this position include: experience with satellite design and understanding of space systems engineering; satellite sensing modalities; including Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR); and autonomous recognition algorithms and machine learning.

On a given day, the selected candidate will:

+ Assess vulnerabilities and create novel satellite design concepts

+ Model satellite orbital mechanics and dynamics (in STK or similar codes)

+ Assess satellite system capabilities, including resolutions, revisit times, and data latencies

+ Devise big-picture architectural concepts to meet customer needs

+ Interface directly with government and commercial customers to evaluate existing designs

Qualifications We Require:

+ Bachelor’s degree in a relevant STEM field, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experience

+ Five years’ engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development

+ Satellite System Design or Modeling Experience

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

+ Electrical design experience

+ Strong understanding of orbital dynamics, satellite architecture modeling and simulation, small satellite design, guidance navigation & control (GNC), satellite threat analysis, remote proximity operations, and satellite command and control

+ Excellent written and verbal communication, project coordination, and interpersonal skills

+ Ability to be self-motivated and work independently as well as collaborate on a multi-disciplinary team, building consensus and resolving issues

+ Experience in the design, development, test, and implementation of space satellite systems

+ Knowledge of space architectures, including ground systems and satellite observatories.

+ Experience in satellite orbital mechanics and dynamics modeling

+ Familiarity with modeling languages, including STK, Python, Matlab, or similar.

+ Familiarity with satellite programs and processes.

+ Experience as a technical design lead on multi-disciplinary projects

+ Strong organization and planning skills

+ Positive and tenacious personality, eager to work in dynamic environments

+ A willingness to accept responsibility and take on more than one assignment at a time

+ Desire to learn new skills as required and develop expertise in areas that may be unfamiliar

+ Active DOE Q and ability to obtain TS/SCI clearances

+ Willingness to travel up to 20%

+ Minimum GPA of 3.2 for bachelor’s degree and 3.5 for master’s degree (or PhD, as applicable)

The Monitoring Systems & Technology Center (6700) has researched and developed new monitoring systems and technologies for over half a century. Building on that legacy, today we support national security missions involving nuclear proliferation detection, treaty monitoring, arms control, and various needs within the national security communities.

The Exploratory Real-Time Sensing organization specializes in developing innovative technologies for remote sensing in the areas of optimized digital processing, real-time decision algorithms, high performance processing, remote distributed data processing architectures, rapid high consequence technology insertions for remote sensing applications, and remote sensing system engineering. Security Clearance:
