What Your Job Will Be Like:

The Energetic Materials organization seeks a motivated and creative individual to improve approaches used for hydrogen content analysis in solids. This work will include evaluating, developing, and optimizing methods that measure hydrogen content in hydrides with high precision, accuracy, and reproducibility. This individual will work in an exciting environment as an integral part of a team that deploys chemical and materials analysis expertise to solve complex and difficult problems in research and development, production, long-term health monitoring, and eventual disposal of energetic materials and devices.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Plan, design, and execute fundamental R&D related to analysis of hydrogen in metal hydrides

+ Critically evaluate existing methods and instrumentation used to quantify hydrogen content

+ Independently modify existing methods and instrumentation to meet specific margins of error

+ Independently identify and/or develop new methods and instrumentation for hydrogen quantification, as appropriate

+ Analyze, validate, interpret, and formally document results

+ Work in a dynamic team environment and manage time according to work demands

Qualifications We Require:

+ Master’s degree plus two years of experience in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, related STEM subject area, or equivalent combination of education and experience

+ Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: chemical analysis, gas analysis, thermal analysis, mass spectrometry, hydrogen quantification, hydrogen production, hydrogen storage materials, or related fields

+ Willingness and ability to physically work at the Sandia New Mexico site location

+ Ability to acquire a DOE Q security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

+ PhD in analytical chemistry, chemistry, chemical engineering, or materials science

+ Good verbal and written communication skills

+ Ability to work both independently and in a collaborative research environment on problems that cut across a variety of science and engineering fields

+ Demonstrated experience in analysis of hydrogen and/or metal hydrides

+ Demonstrated skills needed for successful chemical analysis method development

+ Experience in handling hazardous materials

+ Active DOE L or Q clearance

About Our Team:

The Energetics Characterization Department, Organization 7555 is an integral part of the Explosives Technologies Group at Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Energetics Characterization Department is located within the Explosives Components Facility and is responsible for the development, characterization and performance evaluation of energetic materials (explosives, propellants and pyrotechnics). This includes activities related to aging, materials compatibility, production process evaluation, material research/development and anomaly characterization as they relate to performance of energetic materials. In addition, the Energetics Characterization Department is actively engaged in the development of novel explosives detection systems, new analytical methods of analyses and fundamental research into the understanding of initiation and detonation processes.

Security Clearance:
