What Your Job Will Be Like:

We are seeking a R&D Computer Science staff member with a focus on computational solid mechanics, structural dynamics, and machine learning to join a diverse software development team. Application areas include large-deformation, large-strain, high-velocity impact scenarios for large-scale finite element models of complex multi-component structures. Working knowledge of constitutive models, parallel processing, contact mechanics, and analyst sensibilities may be the ideal candidate. A strong background in the areas of computational mechanics, C++ software development, and high-performance computing. You will assist in developing computational solid mechanics algorithms on current and next generation hardware for a wide range of anticipated use cases supporting the nuclear deterrence (ND) mission.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Develop C++ software of computational solid mechanics capabilities in a large-scale finite element-based application (SIERRA-Solid Solid Mechanics and SIERRA-Structural Dynamics) towards supporting mission critical use cases in normal, abnormal, and hostile environments.

+ Create test cases for verification, performance at scale, and unit level foundational components will be expected and necessary to support the maintenance and development.

+ Work in partnership with computational analysts in solid mechanics to solve problems of national interest.

+ Coordinate and interact with Sandia staff in developing algorithms for mechanics, computational science, and material science.

+ Prepare presentation materials and theory documents as part of conference presentations and journal publications.

Qualifications We Require:

+ PhD in mechanical engineering, civil engineering, aerospace engineering, materials science, engineering mechanics, applied mathematics or other applicable branches of STEM

+ Experience with C++ software development

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Security Clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

+ Your background includes experience in computational mechanics, machine learning, and mathematics

+ Excellent communication skills, ability to explain complex ideas clearly and concisely

+ Experience working effectively in a collaborative and interdisciplinary team environment

+ Experience with acoustics, contact mechanics, plasticity, or failure modeling

+ Experience with high performance parallel computing

About Our Team:

The Department develops massively parallel modeling and simulation codes for solid mechanics and structural dynamics. This includes the development of linear and nonlinear solution algorithms, contact mechanics, finite element formulations, reduced order models, material laws, failure modeling, and research in advanced computational algorithms for continuum and noncontinuum mechanics.

Security Clearance:
