R&D Electrical Engineer-Sensor/Imaging/Communications Systems (Early/Mid-Career)

The Technology Development department needs your help in exploring and developing innovative concepts and new technologies to meet challenging and diverse security threats. We are seeking an Electrical Engineer to join our dynamic team, who, on any given day, will be challenged to:

+ Design and conduct experiments
+ Research and apply concepts from the domains of information theory, machine learning, advanced uncertainty, and control theory to solve challenging problems
+ Work as part of an enthusiastic team, collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) across the lab, and mentor other engineers in new and innovative skills and techniques
+ Design, develop, analyze, and test advanced and innovative sensor, imager, or communications technologies, conduct in-lab system-to-system integration, and execute large field tests
+ Apply systematic scientific methods to evaluate commercial technologies to determine their ability to meet performance requirements.
+ Use statistical techniques to analyze data collected from development, validation, or operational performance tests
+ Evaluate, develop, and implement algorithms in hardware and software to classify data in support of many diverse applications, including, signal processing, sensor fusion, data analytics, and human machine interfaces (HMIs)
+ Manage projects and interface with government sponsors
+ Analyze systems and develop new concepts
+ Write and present technical papers

Many of the technical problems presented will require several skillsets to identify viable solutions. You will initially serve as a team member in the role of an authority in their relevant technical area to solve complex problems. As you mature in this role, you may progress to more difficult challenges that will draw on skill sets across the laboratory to build teams with the necessary skill sets to solve multi-disciplinary problems. Non-technical challenges will require understanding of Sandias corporate principals such as ES&H requirements applied to a given activity or experiment, and the ability to estimate costs, schedules, and reporting requirements dictated by sponsors.

You will need ability to travel 25-50% both domestically and internationally.


+ You have an advanced degree (Masters or PhD) in Electrical Engineering or relevant STEM discipline
+ Your background includes experience in, and desire to perform, field testing, technology development, and challenging system integration work
+ You can obtain a DOE Q clearance with SCI access
+ Ability to travel up to 25% of the time


+ Experience with the design, assembly, testing, and/or implementation of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) and/or Counter-Unmanned Aircraft Systems (CUAS)
+ Current SCI clearance
+ Experience with sensing, optical, communication, data fusion technologies and component integration into a high-performance system
+ Demonstrated experience in data acquisition and signal analysis
+ Experience in software/firmware development
+ Experience in the qualification of systems for use in high consequence applications
+ Experience in sensor and power electronics design and characterization
+ Expertise in electromagnetics
+ Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively at all levels (written and verbal)
+ Experience in DoD security systems analysis or technologies (interior/exterior sensors, video, networks, data fusion, etc.) and / or experience with DoD applications of physical security
+ Demonstrated competence to interpret and develop sound system requirements from general and/or ambiguous guidance
+ Demonstrated project management experience or PMP certification
+ Ability to participate equally well in a follower or leadership role

Security Clearance:

Position requires SCI access.

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance and SCI access. SCI access may require a polygraph examination.

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment must be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance and SCI access, both of which require US citizenship. SCI access may also require a polygraph examination. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain these levels of access may be impacted.
