R&D Electromagnetic Compatability Analyst (Entry/Mid-Career)

We are seeking a R&D, Electrical Engineer who is looking to conduct electromagnetic analyses using multiple state of the art simulation tools on high performance computing clusters and custom-made simulation servers.

Are you excited to work on highly complex, high consequence nuclear deterrence systems, with world-renowned experts in lightning phenomenology, analysis, and protection design? Would you like access to one of a kind lightning, ESD, and EMR test facilities?

If chosen, you will team to understand and solve a diverse set of technical problems associated with electromagnetic coupling into systems and their response. You will learn and apply electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) principles and their implementation in design and testing in complex systems. You will also have mentorship and peer review from renowned researchers in electromagnetic effects with the opportunity to branch out into high voltage breakdown, magnetic components, and multi-physics modeling. Not only will you develop a deep technical understanding of the underpinning physics but also key skills in communication, collaboration, and customer responsiveness. Minimal travel is required.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Work on projects for requirements consultation, analysis and modeling to determine environments and predict system response
+ Support system and component design decisions
+ Analyze and craft facility protection
+ Evaluate anomalous results due to electromagnetic environments
+ Engage with customers and other analysts as well as experimentalists to understand requirements, frame problems appropriately, choose and execute solution methods, and communicate results to customers


+ An advanced degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics or a related field including graduate electromagnetic coursework


+ Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering with a focus in electromagnetics
+ Good interpersonal, communication, oral presentation and documentation skills
+ High level of academic success in both undergraduate and graduate programs
+ Experience and ability to solve technical problems both analytically and computationally.
+ Knowledge of lightning phenomenology and/or other electrical hazards and consequences such as from facility power systems and electrostatic discharge.
+ Experience with industry EM modeling tools (CST, COMSOL, ANSYS), circuit modeling tools (Mentor Graphics, Cadence), and computational and numerical analysis tools (Matlab, C++, Python, etc.).
+ Working knowledge of or familiarity with:

- Lightning protection,
- Electro-explosive device (EED) designs, hazards, and safety requirements,
- DOE and DoD orders, rules, and standards associated with critical operations and facilities
- Familiarity with MIL-STD-461 and associated laboratory tests

Department Description:

The Electrical Surety Analysis Department analyzes complex electrical system behavior for a variety of performance, reliability, safety, aging, and environmental effects criteria. We conduct analyses for a wide customer base, including Nuclear Deterrence systems, subsystems, components, surveillance, and advanced concept development. Primarily through computational simulation, we assure that electrical systems perform as designed and are not susceptible to effects such as aging, temperature extremes, and radiation environments. In certain cases, we investigate why these systems deviate from expected behavior or requirements. Our analysis capability includes the effects of electromagnetic (EM) environments, such as lightning, electrostatic discharge (ESD), and electromagnetic radiation (EMR), on the safety and performance of critical systems, subsystems, and facilities.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance.
