R&D Electronics Engineer-Silicon Based Quantum Computing (Early/Mid-Career)

We are seeking extraordinary individuals to pursue world leading research in next\-generation silicon based quantum information processing\.

The quantum information science and technology \(QIST\) group researches ways to advance silicon as a long term solution for quantum computing\. Recent work has developed new approaches to forming qubits at the MOS interface, including demonstrating the first coherent coupling between a quantum dot qubit and a donor qubit system\. The nuclear spin of donors provides a compellingly high performance qubit and the coupling to quantum dots provides a practical path to couple these qubits\. The groups work necessarily requires detailed understanding of basic silicon\-MOS interfaces\. The research has included meaningful advances towards demonstrating the viability of this technologically important interface for qubits \(e\.g\., improved understanding of fundamental properties like metal\-insulator\-transition, valley\-splitting and spin\-orbit effects\)\. Qubits are fabricated using silicon foundry processing leveraging a core competency of the Sandia National Laboratories microelectronics foundry capability\. The group is, by necessity, multi\-disciplinary integrating: fab, design, cryogenic electrical control & measurement, numeric analysis and supporting cryogenic circuit design\. Meaningful areas of experience include: silicon nanofabrication, low\-noise high\-bandwidth electrical characterization, coherent control of single\-atoms or quantum\-dots, quantum information, cryogenics \(T< 1 K\), electron\-spin or nuclear magnetic resonance \(NMR\) and cryogenic circuitry \(e\.g, amplification and sensors\)\.

The position provides the opportunity to interact with internal modeling and quantum information processing teams providing a rare and vital perspective on theoretical quantum bit and quantum circuit development\. At the same time, the physical qubit team collaborates and publishes with numerous internationally recognized groups outside of Sandia National Laboratories providing improved visibility of the employee's work in this research area\.

Required:

+ PhD in electrical engineering, physics, chemistry, materials science, or related field\.
+ Willingness to perform research in a team environment, including reliance on others for critical\-path elements, is critical\.
+ Extensive \(2\+ years\) research experience on solid state qubit systems \(e\.g\., Si or SiGe\-based quantum dots, donors\), use of cryogenic laboratory test equipment \(e\.g\., dilution refrigerators\)\.

Desired:

+ Post\-doctoral Experience\.
+ Experience with silicon, silicon\-germanium, or germanium material systems\.
+ Experience with silicon device micro/nano\-fabrication \(e\.g\. CMOS or electron\-beam lithography/processing\) or individual dopant device fabrication\.
+ Background in reduced\-dimension semiconductor device physics\.
+ Demonstrated outstanding proficiency with written and oral scientific communications\.

Department Description:

The Advanced Silicon Quantum Devices Department of the Advanced Microsystems Group conducts cutting edge research on silicon\-MOS\-based devices for quantum information sciences applications\. Our fundamental expertise lies in Si quantum dot and donor\-based qubits\. Our core capabilities are Si qubit development and measurement, quantum coherent control and measurement, cryogenic measurement, and quantum information science and technology\. We leverage our strong relationships with the Microsystems Engineering Sciences and Applications \(MESA\) facility, the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies \(CINT\), and other internal and external organizations to develop advanced solid\-state quantum device technologies\.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
