R&D Geosciences Engineer (Early/Mid-Career)

The Geophysical Detection Programs Department at Sandia National Laboratories is seeking a scientist with excellent research skills to both support and continue to develop the geophysical acoustics and infrasound expertise and the department provides as a capability to a variety of national security customers and mission areas, including underground nuclear explosion detection and monitoring, and other infrasound-based national security missions. Job duties will include designing and fielding microbarometer arrays, coordinating experiments, analyzing data, and presenting results to both our research sponsors and the broader scientific community.

The successful applicant will initially contribute primarily as a team member under the guidance of more experienced technical staff. Further career development/advancement is premised on the following:

+ Developing from a contributing team member to a lead researcher who originates and executes novel, high-impact research
+ Pursuing funding via competitive internal laboratory-directed research and development opportunities and, eventually, directly from an external customer base with needs that fall within Sandias mission areas, including nuclear weapons, underground nuclear detonation detection, nuclear nonproliferation, and other national security areas
+ Creation and leadership of cross-disciplinary teams in the technical execution of the highest quality work that delivers high value to the funding customers which can include deliverable products including publications in peer-reviewed journals, conference presentations, reports, patents, and limited distribution deliverables for national security or other proprietary purposes.

Required:

+ Masters Degree in Geophysics, Atmospheric Science, Physics, Acoustics, or another closely-related discipline
+ Willingness and ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Desired:

+ PhD in Geophysics, Physics, Atmospheric Science, Acoustics, or another closely-related discipline
+ Demonstrated research experience in infrasound signal processing such as spectral methods, signal detection, signal association, and event location
+ Excellent communication skills, including oral presentation, preparation of high-impact visual presentations, written reports, and the ability to clearly and concisely communicate scientific and technical information at a level tailored the audience.
+ Willingness and ability to obtain and maintain a SCI clearance
+ A strong peer-reviewed publication record

Department Description:

The Geophysical Detection Programs Department at Sandia National Laboratories develops and leads underground nuclear explosion detection and monitoring programs for global and U.S. national security purposes and also develops other geophysics-based detection and monitoring programs in other national security-related mission areas. We partner with other departments in the Proliferation Detection Programs group and with departments across Sandia to integrate multi-disciplinary capabilities into teams that can address broad national security needs in geophysically-based detection and monitoring. We strategically partner with our Federal sponsors, including NNSAs Office of Defense Nuclear Nonproliferation Research and Development, AFTAC, and other government agencies to both define future and execute current detection and monitoring programs and also to identify and plan for near-, mid-, and long-term U.S. needs in these areas.

Security Clearance:
