What Your Job Will Be Like:

Our team is seeking a hardworking Research Laboratory Support Technologist to support our electron and ion microscopy capabilities.On any given day, you may be called on to: Conduct materials characterization using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and/or focused ion beam (FIB) on a wide variety of materials to assist scientists and engineers in research, development, and failure analysis. This will include performing qualitative and quantitative analyses for work involving experimental, theoretical, or practical applications of materials. You will partner with staff members to develop new experimental processes, use novel analytical techniques, establish new characterization methods, optimize existing laboratory and characterization techniques, and perform experiments. You’ll work with staff and customers to develop and maintain material and process specifications to support engineering and scientific processes and work with key suppliers, as well as provide customers with detailed documentation and reports on work completed, including the preparation of information for scientific and engineering publications. You will also have the opportunity to develop, build, modify, repair, or maintain a wide variety of laboratory apparatus and equipment, and interface this equipment for data acquisition, all while performing work in a safe and compliant manner, seek out expert's advice as needed, and maintaining the necessary documentation.

Qualifications We Require:

+ Bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM), or the equivalent combination of related education and shown experience

+ Experience working in a research or laboratory environment

+ Able to acquire and maintain a DOE security clearance

Qualifications We Desire:

+ Skill and knowledge in one or more areas of physics, materials science, chemistry, geology, optical sciences, engineering, or microelectronics/semiconductors

+ An understanding of the scientific method and experimental procedures

+ Proven ability to operate data acquisition systems

+ Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment

+ Knowledge of materials characterization instrumentation and techniques, preferably scanning electron microscopy and/or focused ion beam to measure and observe physical phenomena and effects

+ Proven ability to conceptualize and communicate major elements of experimental design and results

+ Proven ability to work independently with minimal guidance, as well as collaboratively as part of a team

+ Demonstrated ability to write operating procedures, methods of analysis, and laboratory procedures

The Materials Characterization & Performance Department supports Sandia by developing and applying a breadth of analytical techniques to assess the structure, composition, and properties of materials. We serve our customers by helping them understand material behavior and performance, develop improved materials for specific components and applications, as well as develop lifetime performance predictions for materials. By applying a breadth of techniques, including spectroscopic and diffraction techniques, light and electron microscopy, metallography, surface analysis, chemical analysis, and contaminant analysis, we provide materials understanding and solutions for: engineering components and structures, failure analysis of all types of materials, and research projects across a wide customer base. We serve the entire corporation in their material analysis needs and frequently other federal agencies and industry. We also act as a gateway to materials characterization capabilities within and outside of Sandia. Security Clearance:
