R&D Manager, Advanced Accelerator Physics (1651)

Albuquerque, NM 87102
:

Are you passionate about your work and dream of utilizing state-of-the-art facilities to explore solutions? Join a dynamic team that helps tackle some of the most challenging issues facing our nations security!

We are seeking a Manager to lead the Advanced Accelerator Physics Organization, which is within the Pulsed Power Sciences Center (Center 1600) at Sandia. In this role, you will develop and guide teams conducting research within state-of-the-art pulsed-power facilities, in developing new pulsed power accelerator designs, and in executing projects in support of those designs. The principal goals of these activities are to improve the understanding of accelerator physics; apply the understanding to the development of advanced accelerator technology; use the technology to maintain, optimize, and upgrade Z and other pulsed-power machines; and establish the technical foundation upon which we will build next-generation pulsed-power accelerators in support of the U.S. Department of Energys national-security missions. In addition, you will play a key part in developing and mentoring current technical staff as well as the next generation of researchers in the field!

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Lead accelerator-physics experiments on the Z accelerator and other pulsed-power machines.
+ Lead projects to maintain, optimize, and upgrade the performance of Z accelerator pulsed power systems.
+ Lead the development of the accelerator-technical basis for a NGPPF (next-generation pulsed-power facility), capable of driving 40-80 MA currents.
+ Lead the development of new pulsed-power components, systems, and accelerators.
+ Develop collaborations with external partners including other national laboratories and universities.
+ Recruit and hire technical staff members and technologists and develop and mentor personnel.
+ Manage publication of results in premier peer-reviewed physics and engineering journals.

The experimental component of the work outlined above will be conducted in pulsed-power laboratory environments and will involve a variety of hazards. Compliance to Safety Regulations is critical and experience applying the principles of engineered safety to laboratory activities will be a benefit.

Required:

+ Bachelors in engineering, physics, or a related field and a Masters or PhD in engineering, physics, or a related field
+ Eight years experience, including experience in the field of advanced accelerator physics
+ Publication record that includes peer-reviewed journal articles in engineering, physics, or a related field
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy Q-level security clearance

Desired:

+ Two years leadership or management experience
+ Outstanding academic record
+ Experience defining and solving challenging and complex problems in a timely manner
+ Advanced interpersonal skills
+ Experience working in a fast paced and technically challenging research environment
+ Experience designing and fielding advanced pulsed-power components and systems
+ Experience working with electrical, mechanical, pressure, vacuum, and diagnostic systems
+ Active DoE Q clearance

Department Description:

The Advanced Accelerator Physics Department develops the world's most advanced pulsed-power-accelerator technology. We support pulsed power systems operations, maintenance, optimization, and improvement for Sandias 85-terawatt Z accelerator, and conduct accelerator-physics experiments on Z. We also conduct experiments on a number of other pulsed-power machines with peak electrical powers that range from 5 gigawatts to 500 gigawatts. The experiments are establishing the technical foundation that will be necessary to develop next-generation pulsed-power accelerators. We apply the technology to the development of new accelerators in support of a wide variety of U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) programs. Over the coming several years, we expect 1651 to play a lead or active role in the development of numerous pulsed power drivers for several national security missions. In particular, 1651 will develop and realize designs and experimental realizations for 40-80 MA high current drivers to support platforms for fusion ignition, high yield fusion, radiation effects, materials properties, and nuclear explosives package physics for national security and stockpile stewardship.
