R&D, Manager - Geotechnology Department (8862)

The Geoscience Research and Applications Group \(8860\) has an opening for a Department Manager for the Geotechnologies Department, Org\. 8862\. The Manager is responsible for providing leadership and advocacy for a team of highly talented and experienced scientists, technologists, post\-docs, contractors, and student interns with a broad range of backgrounds including geology, chemical engineering, petroleum chemistry, geomechanics, and computational science\. Core to this department is support provided to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve\.



On any given day, you may be called on to do the following:



+ Foster a safe, secure, creative and productive team\-oriented work environment and a culture that promotes safety, security, and values a diverse and inclusive work environment;

+ Implement the Environmental Safety & Health \(ES&H\), Work Planning and Controls \(WP&C\) for department activities;

+ Promote and support the professional development of staff along with assessment of performance, balancing work assignments, providing recognition and if necessary dealing with disciplinary actions;

+ Coordinate recruitment, selection, training, and hiring of newly hired staff;

+ Coordinate current department activities and support staff project managers and matrixed staff to deliver on existing projects including the Strategic Petroleum Reserve Project, the Crude Oil Characterization Project, and potentially other high rigor activities;

+ Develop and sustain partnerships with other organizations within Sandia, other laboratories; industry, and academia;

+ Ensure that the organization is responsive to both internal and external line and program requirements;

+ Undertakieng a Subprogram manager role within Sandias Fossil Energy Program which role includes working with staff and other managers to develop relationships with and new projects with DOEs Office of Fossil Energy, the Strategic Petroleum Reserve Program Office, the National Energy Technology Laboratory petroleum and mining industry and other Federal and State entities;

+ Working with the leadership of other programs to apply the departments capabilities to Nuclear Waste Management, Geothermal Energy, Nuclear Non\-proliferation and other appropriate mission areas; and

+ Serving as a derivative classifier\.



Required:

+ Bachelor's and advanced degree in STEM \(Master's or PhD\) or a Bachelor's degree in STEM plus four years' relevant experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree;

+ Eight or more years of relevant technical experience;

+ Demonstrated ability to successfully manage projects and deliver results;

+ Demonstrated experience interacting effectively with multiple levels of internal management and external customers;

+ Demonstrated ability tomanage people, and guide multidisciplinary teams;

+ Experience with technical business development and evidence of successfulresults;

+ Experience working with sensitive information or classified matter; and the

+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q\-level security clearance\.



Desired:



To the degree possible, provide a resume or associated materials that provide evidenceof:



+ Advanced degree in Geology, Geomechanics, Geochemistry, Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mathematics, Energy Systems, Economics, or similar disciplines;

+ Technical experience related to the Strategic Petroleum Reserve or related technical fields including salt cavern integrity, oil chemistry, fossil energy, systems management and related fields;

+ Project management experience and demonstrated success leading teams on moderate size or larger projects \($1\-5M/yr\), along with experience defining customer objectives, working interactively with management, and successful communication with technical and nontechnical customers;

+ Demonstrated understanding and skill in emotional intelligence, political acumen, and use of appropriate communication skills to deal with complex interpersonal situations with those you supervise, peers, and your leadership with successful outcomes;

+ Demonstrated experience providing an example of ethics and organizational values;

+ Experience and skill in customer relationship development, understanding customer needs and business models, presenting value propositions, and delivering customer value;

+ Experience and ability to mentor individuals within and external to direct responsibilities;

+ Experience and ability to work with teams to develop organizational strategies that identify organization goals and objectives and to develop action plans to accomplish these goals;

+ Excellent oral and written communication skills;

+ Experience and ability to manage multiple, complex tasks in parallel, to organize, prioritize, balance or renegotiate, and follow through to completion;

+ Two or more years of personnel \(line\) management experience;

+ Ability to undertake business travel to build and sustain customer and partner relationships and knowledge of new science and technology developments;

+ Knowledge of Sandias company policies and procedures including safety, security, financial, environmental and other operational areas and how to effectively implement work within this policy framework;

+ Active DOE Q\-level security clearance\.



Department Description:



The Geotechnology Department is the home for Sandias geotechnical and chemical engineering support for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and its technical history related to the subsurface geoscience elements of the project\. This is the largest program within the Department of Energys Office of Fossil Energy Reserves Division\. Key personnel from the department are part of the national continuity of operations team to support the national energy supply, and hold professional geologist credentials to operate within the states of Louisiana and Texas in their respective geological roles\. Expertise in the department includes geology, geomechanics, complex computer simulation, data management, geospatial analysis, chemical engineering, subsurface integrity and monitoring and related fields\. The department also provides chemical engineering for surface based fossil energy mid\-stream projects including the Crude Oil Characterization project\. The expertise of the department has also been utilized to support subsurface geological characterization for national security, nuclear weapons and non\-proliferation missions\. The department currently does not have responsibility for any laboratory or solely managed field facilities, but the staff work closely with the M&O Contractor for the SPR at four sites along the Gulf Coast in Louisiana and Texas, and with test facilities operated out of Center 1500\.

Security Clearance:



Position requires a Department of Energy \(DOE\) granted Q\-level security clearance\.
