R&D Manager Scalable Computer Architectures

We are seeking a R&D Technical Manager to lead the Scalable Computer Architectures Department in Sandias Center for Computing Research (CCR). The mission of this department is research, development, and analysis of innovative computing architectures for national security missions which rely on cutting-edge high-performance computing (HPC)! This organization is sited in the Computer Science Research Institute (CSRI), a world-class institution for foundational and applied research in computer science. On any given day, you will be called on to:

+ Help manage SNLs portfolio of highly multi-disciplinary co-design activities supporting the research, development and deployment of HPC capabilities for national security missions.
+ Communicate and collaborate with NNSA sponsors and partners at other national laboratories as well as other federal agencies, industry and academia.
+ Coordinate department staffs projects supporting multi-mission objectives and partner with the staff on advancing their career development goals.
+ Recruit well qualified new staff and post docs in an increasingly competitive market.
+ Drive the development of Sandias world class HPC architectural modeling and deploy this capability along with advanced architecture testbeds and prototypes to drive the design of future computing architectures.
+ Lead the assessment of emerging technologies in computing to provide guidance for Exascale and beyond HPC system procurements and technology roadmaps
+ Collaborate with vendors to prioritize, develop and improve their technologies in order to better meet the needs of the nation and national security

This department focuses on exploration of innovative computing designs, development and application of modeling and simulation tools, deployment of small to moderate scale testbeds and prototypes, performance analysis and improvement for mission critical applications, and deep and enduring partnerships with other national laboratories, federal agencies, industry, academia, and the international community. This manager will be part of the Extreme Computing Group in CCR and the NNSA/Advance Scientific Computing (ASC) program which delivers mission critical Exascale computing capability to the Nuclear Deterrence mission.


+ MS or PhD in computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or relevant STEM field, plus bachelor's in relevant STEM
+ Six years proven experience
+ Experience leading multi-disciplinary projects in high performance computing
+ Background in the design of computing hardware and software components
+ Ability to access and work with Export Controlled Information


+ Willingness to manage a team of staff with flexible work arrangements including telecommuting and matrix agreements.
+ Experience mentoring and developing early career staff with a focus on career development.
+ A commitment to fostering an inclusive culture, as demonstrated in your application materials
+ Demonstrated national security applications expertise and experience.
+ Able to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance
+ Experience in hardware prototyping or hardware/software co-design
+ Experience in program development with OFAs (e.g., the DHS, DoD, IC).
+ Demonstrated ability to develop trusting relationships with DOE program managers, as well as with peer and collaborator leaders.
+ Demonstrated ability to lead projects with challenging schedules and staffing constraints.
+ Ability to engage technically with department staff and collaborating organizations to understand and represent the work.
+ Experience providing oversight of security and need-to-know management procedures.
+ Experience managing and coordinating specific deliverables, overall program and project plans, budgets, schedules, and staffing to ensure sponsor needs and expectations are met.
+ Experience with Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning workloads

Department Description:

The Scalable Computer Architecture department pursues foundational research and development as well as analysis for the development of future supercomputer systems for cutting edge high performance scientific and data analytic applications. Areas of active research include: HPC system architectures, system-on-chip processor designs, advanced memory subsystems, interconnection networks, large-scale system resilience, power monitoring and control, application performance analysis, the development and use of HPC architectural system simulators, proxy applications and advanced architecture test beds for HPC co-design. The department works closely with mission organizations, other national laboratories, federal agencies, industry, academia and the international computing community to accomplish these goals.

Security Clearance:

This position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.

Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately. If the appeal is unsuccessful, the MOW may try to go through the UPIV process one year after the decision date.
