R&D Mechanical Engineer (Early/Mid-Career)

We are seeking a highly motivated R&D Mechanical Engineer to support the Product Definition Tools and Resources (2239) department working in the Product Definition (PD) capability. Your work will support the ND design community and assisting programs/other customers with their designs to ensure they meet mission standards. Areas of concentration include ND Product Definition, Pressure Safety, RPPs, and 2200 strategic program/process initiatives.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

+ Apply integrated technical judgment to deliver Product Definition SME guidance and solutions to ND customer missions.
+ Apply understanding of mechanical and manufacturing engineering/scientific principles to execute program technical requests from ND customers.
+ Collaborating with customers and design staff to establish work scope.
+ Develop and document agreed upon tasks and deliverables.
+ Support program design staff in the design and development of products/deliverables.

Some travel will be required.


+ Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or relevant degree plus 4 years relevant professional experience
+ Experience using PTCs Creo solid modeling and PDMLink applications.
+ Experience with the NNSA configuration management and engineering authorization (EA) system.
+ Active US DOE Q security clearance


+ Certified at the ASME GDTP - 1994 Technologist or Senior levels.
+ Experience in producing designs, models, and product definition of complex objects.
+ Demonstrated ability to team across disciplines.
+ Strong verbal and written communication skills.
+ Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
+ Experienced in creating mechanical and/or electro-mechanical product design definition using Creo Parametric and PDMLink tools
+ Familiar with DPBPS and RPSS requirements and best practices associated with governing NW Product Realization
+ Knowledge and understanding of product definition processes used at Sandia to support NSE and SPP partners
+ Demonstrated ability to team well across disciplines to investigate and provide product definition solutions
+ Experienced in applying dimensioning and tolerancing in accordance with ASME Y14.5 and 9900000
+ Experience in manufacturing and/or inspection, as it applies to product drawing definition

The Product Definition Tools and Resources (2239) organization delivers common configuration management tools and resources that leverage industry best practices, modern applications, and NW-specific requirements and best practices to assure consistent and high-quality engineering product definition to Sandia design/engineering staff. We also provide Sandia's largest 3D printing capability in polymers.

Security Clearance:

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance to start.

Position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level security clearance or active clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD) to be considered for this position.
