We are seeking a mechanical engineer to join the engineering/design teams that transform scientists high energy density physics ideas and requirements into precision hardware to be shot on Z, the worlds most powerful pulsed power facility. While engineering fundamentals are necessary, success in this position is largely dependent on the desire and ability to communicate effectively with all elements of the hardware realization cycle.

On any given day, you will engage in:

+ Developing design requirements with Principal Investigators to meet research and testing objectives.
+ Designing precision experimental hardware and diagnostics using a variety of tools, including 3D CAD software while confirming that parts can be effectively manufactured and inspected.
+ Creating the design definition documentation utilizing Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), ensuring that all parts and assemblies have proper form, fit and function.
+ Working with our experienced on-site manufacturing and assembly team to implement solutions and drive improvements.
+ Facilitating the development of solutions to a range of technical and logistical problems.
+ Creating layouts, drawings, and illustrations to enable fabrication of experimental hardware.
+ Interacting frequently with physicists, technical specialists, designers, technologists, etc. as part of a dynamic team providing leading-edge scientific outcomes for national programs.


+ Bachelors and masters degree in relevant STEM field, the requirement for a STEM Masters degree can be waived for candidates with a bachelors in a relevant STEM and equivalent engineering or scientific experience
+ Experience with mechanical design of precision systems
+ Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q Level Security Clearance


+ Proficient in SolidWorks and/or CREO
+ Familiarity with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
+ Familiarity with pulsed power systems, high voltage systems
+ Demonstrated communication skills, both oral and written
+ Ability to run finite element codes such as ABAQUS or COMSOL Multiphysics
+ Ability to run Sandias shock hydrodynamic codes (CTH and/or ALEGRA)
+ Knowledge of precision manufacturing techniques and operations
+ Demonstrated ability to team with others and deliver results
+ Demonstrated ability to manage and complete multiple tasks in a timely manner

Department Description:

The Z Load Hardware, Diagnostics, and Containment Department engineers, designs, manages fabricates, and documents all Z machine physics-centric experimental hardware in close partnership with the scientific investigators. Our department engages with entities who manufacture the high-precision components for the various physics-based test components. We are a team of engineers, designers, and technologists working together in a dynamic environment developing new experimental hardware designs and interacting with scientists that work on the Z pulsed power facility on research in the areas of atomic physics, shock physics, radiation transport, planetary science, and inertial confinement fusion. We work closely with Zs Principal Investigator community on the use of surface coatings, surface coating processes, and hardware designs towards improving performance, reliability, and repeatability of science experiments conducted on the nations premier pulsed power facility.
